Bacterial infection? Not eating and can't keep down water

Over the past two weeks my 11month old lab has been getting less interested in food, stopped eating yesterday and couldn't keep down water. Took him to vets and they started him on antibiotics and gave him a shot to stop vomiting. Today couldnt keep down water and won't eat plus lethargic so took him to the emergency vets who gave him an x-ray, (clear but showing a build up of gas above intestines and in stomach), bloods and started him on an IV for fluids. He's currently doing well and they're discharging him later today but think it's a bacterial infection as the vets diagnosed yesterday. Tummy isn't sore and x-ray clear of obstructions, plus they don't think there's anything they can't see due to the way things are flowing there. Has anyone else been through similar? I can't get my head around him going downhill so quick and then ok to come home, is a bacterial infection this serious? I'm so worried about him, just looking for reassurance he'll be ok as the food thing has been an issue (I thought he was getting bored so have been doing lots of food puzzles and Kong's to get him interested as he's been fine otherwise). Yesterday his temp was 40.1 and today 28.9 so they say that's a big plus today.

Appreciate anyone sharing similar stories! Picture of the little trouble maker.

In my limited experience with my dog they can go downhill very quickly and also recover just as quickly with the right treatment.

Hope your boy is ok but when he gets back trust your instincts and if you are not happy don't hesitate to contact the vets again.

Thanks for replying. He's home and no better, been on a drip and there's a lot of gas above his intestine on the x-ray so they think he'll have more diarrhea later. His bloods showed he was dehydrated but nothing else concerning and he's still got a cannula in his wee leg.

Tried him with a tiny amount of rice and chicken and isn't interested at all. They said the only thing that's come up is they've given him anti vomiting meds past two days and he's still vomited his water back up which is very unusual. Hasn't eaten for two days I'm worried sick!

Feel so bad for him, just want my excitable l cheeky pup back. Back tomorrow so everything crossed for a good night. Can't tell anyone in RL as kids are away and don't want their holidays ruined Sad theyll be so worried.

Oh poor thing.

On the food front mine has somethings taken several attempts at offering food after returning from a vet admission as he tends to shut down and needs time to adjust to being back at home so do keep offering just tiny bits incase he suddenly perks up a bit.

Thanks for that, he's been fast asleep since getting home but I will do when he wakes. They think gastroenteritis is a secondary issue to whatever it is so I'll just keep trying to tempt him. Thanks for making me feel not so alone Flowers

My previous Lab had canine seasonal illness which had symptoms very similar to yours. When he came home, I started with the water I had boiled white rice in, then when a few times of that stayed down I added a little rice. After he was keeping that down, I added a spoonful of pumpkin and chicken baby food to the rice and water, and gradually got him on his normal food over 24-48 hours.

He's actually currently back at the emergency vets being tube fed with nausea meds to stop the vomiting. He's skin and bones 😢I didn't think they could get seasonal disorder in the Spring? The past two weeks have been a living hell, I'll pass that on to the vet tomorrow thank you. I'm just pretty broken at this point.

That's so awful! You must be beside yourself. They must have done stool samples & more bloods? Any indication there what it could be?
What medications is he on?

BotterMon · 20/04/2022 19:22

Nothing to add bar fingers crossed he comes through ok. What a horribly worrying time for you.

Just sending all my best wishes. Hope your lovely boy is on the mend soon x

i know how anxious I’ve been when my old girl went off food. My latest walking companion came down with something a few weeks back but whatever it was went with antibiotics. And a lot of sleep.

I’m keeping all crossed for your boy. I can’t imagine the worry after two weeks of it. I’d be broken too.

He is such a beauty. Wishing you both the strength to get through this. 🐾 🐾 x

How awful, I hope he's okay Flowers

Oh no sorry to see he is back at the vets.

What tests have they done so far? I remember when mine was in for 2 weeks with severe D&V they ran lots of different blood tests, stool samples and ultrasound. It was only months later after several more episodes that we ended up with an endoscopy to confirm IBD.
