Bleeding from penis

My 7 yo Whippet is bleeding from his penis. I'm waiting for the vets to open to get him an appointment.

Don't know why I'm posting here other than to see if anyone has had the same problem with their dog and it's not been anything sinister.

He's eating normally, is a bit more needy wanting more loves than usual, seems to be weeing ok.
My other dog has been licking the hell out of him and has caused sore dry patches on him around his stomach area. It's only now I've realised he's been doing it because he can obviously sense something is wrong.

Hope you have got it sorted at the vets now. There are a lot of reasons for this from UTI, or cystitis to injury to other issues. Horrid when our dogs are ill Sad

He's there later this afternoon. Just hoping it's nothing too bad.

Our whippet had this but it was because he was on painkillers and it caused him kidney issues. Definitely a vet job.

Hope it's not too serious.

The vet prescribed antibiotics incase there is infection. If they don't work then it's a scan as his prostate is enlarged. If nothing shows on the scan I.e a tumour then she recommends he's neutered as this usually solves any prostate issues.

Hope the antibiotics sort him out.

Fingers crossed.

My last dog had similar aged 8. It was his prostate causing problems with his bladder. The pressure was causing infections. We had him neutered and he was absolutely fine. Fingers crossed it’s something similar for your boy.

Exactly the same with our last dog. He was 10 at the time, I think, and recovered really well.

@mothertrucking, our vet said it’s common in entire males.

With my next pup we are going to neuter later than is typical, but before middle age to try and avoid it.

The good thing was we knew he was fully grown and developed and there were no adverse effects from the neutering. He was still the same lovely boy and he went on to live a very long and happy life.

Same here with an 8 year old. Once his knackers were off his prostate returned to normal and the bloody pee stopped.

Sorry to revive an old post, but don't suppose anybody rememebers how long before you saw an improvement with castration. My dog had the implant 10 days ago so might be a bit different.

Was there a lot of blood? Some wees look almost pure blood and it's scary. He is having regular scans, urine tests. Had some of fluid from cysts drained and analysed too, but it's been going on for over 2 months now.@mothertrucking @GCAcademic @TreetopsandTailwaggers @muddyford

It's two Labradors ago, so a bit of while, but as far as I remember his pee looked like diluted blood, perhaps 50:50. He was castrated within ten days and blood ceased almost immediately.
