He's currently at vets with DH and for some reason I have a horrible feeling about it. He vomitted everywhere immediately after his breakfast this morning (then went down the corridor and was sick some more) so I didn't feed him again until tea time to give his stomach a chance to settle. He's seemed fine in himself, perhaps a little more sedate but he's quite a lazy dog in general so it's hard to tell. Fed him about an hour ago and he did the same thing, hence the vets.

The vet is giving him an injection to make him throw up, and has mentioned keeping him in overnight and a follow up blood test, but may not keep him in as he's super stressed and barking at everyone so they will see if he settles down. He's a very friendly dog but funnily enough he barked at the postman this morning which is unusual. He's also been sneezing a bit and has had a drippy nose which I've had my eye on for a couple days, and I think these things combined have convinced me there is something really sinister underlying.

He's 18months old and unneutered (planning to in next few months) if that makes a difference.

Could anyone talk me down?!

There's been a really nasty d&v virus been doing the rounds for a couple of months now. Mine was quite ill a few weeks ago but is right as rain now so try not to worry. He's also had a couple of episodes where he has vomited fir no apparent reason and been absolutely fine afterwards so it's not always something sinister.
Ps I take it you mean an injection to stop him throwing up not make him? Mine had sn anti emotional injection and a course of antibiotics for the infection and was fine in a few days.

My Lab vomits loads, he eats random crap though. Has yours eaten anything he shouldn’t?

Vet told me not to bring mine in unless he’s vomiting for a week.

Dogs get viruses and feel unwell too, maybe he has picked something up. He’s being seen by a vet so try not to worry. Brew

He did actually snaffle some of my son's pasta bake this afternoon (which he left on the floor despite knowing better - ddog is half Lab!). However it was only a tiny bit and doesn't account for the morning throw up.

The injection was to make him throw up so the vet could see if there was anything else in his stomach that could be making him sick, but nothing else came up and she doesn't seem overly worried. She's sent him home with charcoal tablets and instructions not to feed him again tonight, and will still do the blood test next week.

Thanks for the reassure - I know a couple of dogs on our estate have had the D&V bug so entirely possible he's picked something up on his walk.

Could he have eaten something he shouldn't?

It's most likely a bug, but I would also be worried about an obstruction.

Suzi888 · 11/04/2022 20:39

I’d say he’s picked something up, either bug or something he ate, or just one of those things. I always panic when my dog is sick, I think probably why the vet said there’s a reason for the saying “sick as a dog” and told me not to keep Blushtaking him in. Can’t help but worry though can we.
Bread is very bad for dogs and pasta is similar I’d have thought especially if there was garlic or onion in the sauce - also bad. DDog once ate an onion- he’s an absolute swine….

It sounds like your pup will be ok OP.

familychallenge · 11/04/2022 20:45

The bug that's been around for a couple of months is proper nasty- reminded me of norovirus in humans. My dog was as ill as I've ever seen him- couldn't keep water down and throwing up constantly, very apathetic, had 2 anti sickness injections and was very sorry for himself for about 5 days. Bounced back just fine as I'm sure yours will. I boiled chicken in water and just gave him the broth when he couldn't keep anything else down. I think especially with young healthy dogs it hits them hard and then they recover well. Try not to fret, he sounds well looked after, and soon all will be well again!

Sisisimone · 11/04/2022 20:54

Mine had sn anti emotional injection
I meant anti emetic Grin. Bloody autocorrect

RunningFromInsanity · 11/04/2022 21:22

Dog can pick up bugs just like humans, and just like us, they then throw up.
Or he may have eaten something on a walk that hasn’t agreed with him.

He should be absolutely fine, but I know how much they worry us when they are poorly!

runforyourdog · 11/04/2022 21:28

I so wouldn't take my dog to the vet for that..

tabulahrasa · 11/04/2022 23:14

Not going to lie, I wouldn’t have taken him to the vet for that either, I’m not saying you shouldn’t have, because maybe you’re seeing something that isn’t coming across in your post.

But when dogs are sick they do really go for it, so if there were no other real obvious signs of anything wrong and they’re not dehydrated, I’d have tried chicken and rice until at least tomorrow tbh.

So it’s probably a bug or eaten something that’s disagreed with him - no harm getting him checked seeing as you were worried though, my vet says she’d much rather see someone for nothing much than people waiting until something is really really wrong.

StrawberryPot · 12/04/2022 08:45

I wouldn't have taken any of my dogs to the vet if they'd thrown up a few times but otherwise seemed fine in themselves.

Seems odd for the vet to give something to make your dog sick. Surely if it was something he'd eaten he would have got rid of it the first couple of times he'd vomited?

StrawberryPot · 12/04/2022 08:46

Hope he's fine today by the way.

Itsbeenaweek · 15/04/2022 10:38

How's your dog now? I've just seen this and my dog has had similar. Started with him going off his food a bit over a couple of weeks with a cough, then vomiting it back up, then when he couldn't keep water down I took him in and they've given him antibiotics, blood test, x-ray, IV drip as he was dehydrated over a couple of days. Now he's still on antibiotics plus probiotic, special digestible food and has the runs so you can imagine the gas coming out of him.

They think it's gastroenteritis. Hope your pup's ok, I didn't realise how common it was for them to get bugs!

muddyford · 19/04/2022 07:06

I take mine if they are either listless or dehydrated. Our last Lab got canine seasonal illness, which killed a friend's dog the same time as mine was ill. Don't let anyone tell you that CSI is only in certain areas.
