My dog is killing me

My 12 year old mutt is starting to dement.
Up to a couple of weeks ago, he was happy to sleep on the end of the bed with my other dog and the cats. But he's recently started wandering around at night, jumping on and off the bed, clawing at the carpet, pawing at my head, generally making a row, being disruptive, and wrecking my sleep. It all kicks off about midnight. I've tried removing him, checking docks at him, putting my leg out of the bed as a barrier...I'm exhausted. I haven't had a decent kip for two weeks. I nea6fell asleep on the motorway yesterday. I don't know what to do. I can't close him out of the room, the others need to get in/out. Right now I'm trying with chucking hitting the kitchen and shutting the door on him. But I know that will just result in scratching that wollbecho around the (tiny) house.

What can I do ?? I love him but right now I could throttle him Sad (obviously I'm not going to!)

Not 'checking docks' , chucking socks

Would a crate work? Might be difficult if he wasn't crate trained as a pup but worth a go especially with a filled kong or chew

PuppyPowerTool · 11/04/2022 03:16

I have been thinking about a crate, no idea where I'd put it, but I'm getting desperate.

He's currently standing looking at me, pawing me. Poor thong looks terrified but my sympathy is near non existent

Has he had a vet check? I’d be concerned that at 12 there was something medical that’s causing change to behaviour- pain or stiffness etc etc

Wallywobbles · 11/04/2022 03:22

Depending what he is some dogs go down hill very quickly. Our cocker got cocker rage which was scary. And one of our spaniels declined so fast. Less than 2 weeks. It might be time to begin to think the unthinkable.

Poppins2016 · 11/04/2022 03:23

I'm sorry, this sounds very difficult for you.

I would speak to your vet, as there are medications available that can help dogs with dementia. The vet will be able to give advice on managing the behaviour, too.

PuppyPowerTool · 11/04/2022 03:24

During the day , he's absolutely fine, his usual chipper self. No change in behaviour. It's just at night. I will call the vet. But was wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar. I don't want to think the unthinkable, he's physically absolutely fine..

He's a rescue shih tzu. Got him and his buddy 7 years ago, when they were 5.

My dog started moving around a lot at night , pacing settling then pacing again .
This went on for a while ( about 3/4 weeks) then started whimpering at night too so I took him to the vets .
I found out he had arthritis keeping still made him stiff and sore so he moved around .
He was put on pain killers and was fine .

It didn't effect him during the day because he naturally moved around more anyway. .

powershowerforanhour · 11/04/2022 04:07

Melacutin (available online w/o prescription), poss NSAID trial just in case of arthritis, failing that 2mg diazepam or 50-100mg gabapentin at bedtime. Is my usual go to for the ancient non sleepers.

yorkshireteaspoonie · 11/04/2022 04:37

My mums elderly dog has been doing this, having her up in the night, 2-3 times pacing etc, she was exhausted by it.

Unfortunately my mum became unwell about ten days ago and had to go into hospital so I took the dog. She's been sleeping in the kitchen with my two no problem all night through, no accidents or pacing. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Can you try putting both dogs in the kitchen overnight so they have company?

PuppyPowerTool · 11/04/2022 07:00

I'm going to try the kitchen , yes. And I'll look into those drugs, thank you
