It has been bleeding and is clearly bent backwards he won't let me touch it. Not sure what to do now obvs no time to get a vet appointment before we set off in the morning. any advice? not sure if we can go away now.

Is there not an emergency vets in your nearest city? My (rural) vets answer machine always has emergency details on there.
Am I right in thinking a few claw is only removable under anaesthetic? My own dog had his removed when being neutered as a pup, so I'm unsure, but when he cracked a front claw they just whipped it out.

Your vet will have an out of hours suggestion, if you call the practice there's likely to be a number of an open vets on the answer machine.

Ooh bless him, weve had this happen twice and both required vets visits. The first time hes just snapped it at the bottom so they cortorised (?) it and left it alone. The second time it wouldnt stop bleeding, vets told me to try and put flour on it - as an anticoagulant and bring him in. They took it off under anesthetic..... is it possible to take him to an emergency vets?

Vet nurse here ,not an emergency but very painful !
Depending on the dogs nature and the type of fractured claw sometimes a very quick pull will remove the claw without need to sedate.
If the claw is still well attached its too painful to do this so sedation usually required.
If you check your vets out of hours info there will be cover, i'm sure you will be seen today , if not there ring around.
After the procedure if there is a raw 'quick' after claw removed its sore and sensitive so we would often put a light dressing on for a couple of days , but not all need a dressing .
If this were my dog and i could see a vet today even though not perfect i would still take on hols tomorrow.
Its sore but usually heals really quickly .

I've just spoken to the emergency out of hours vets they've just advised me to bathe it with cooled boiled water to give it a good clean and bandage it. they said if he seems to be in some discomfort then I can take him down anytime throughout the night. I'm more concerned about him catching and snagging the nail and it causing him pain. surely it's best if the remaining nail is removed as I can't see a bandage staying in place. He will be going on the beach on holiday worried about the sand getting in it etc. He is a JRT.

Emergency vet will inject with anesthetic and clean it up. DDog has done it twice but hers is an extra claw rather than a dew claw so don't try giving it a quick pull! You'll need to keep her out water - especially salt water!

Are you leaving after your vet would be open?

Mine has done this 4 times now, they literally just clip it or pull it off, it takes minutes, they might just squeeze you in first thing.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/04/2022 16:06

My old dog had nails that were not set in the beds properly and this happened A LOT

I would probably push to get him seen and the the bent nail clipped off because if it gets pulled it would be worse.

One vet I saw used to wrap them in practically a cast, next vet was much of the opinion that it needed air to heal more quickly and I have to say it seemed to heal faster this way.

I think it is very sore initially but that settles quickly. Maybe the sea would be good for it?

One of the dogs I walk, she breaks her claws repeatedly. Can mean plenty blood, too. She hates her feet being touched so even trying to clean her feet (when feet are uninjured after a muddy walk) much less touch a bad claw is an ordeal. Honestly, (vet endorsed this) we just leave it now. No problems caused with this strategy. I might squirt saline water on it if obviously muddy.

Mine has done this twice and it was a vet job. Pulled them out, he really yelped the second time and it was nearly £100 each time. It healed well but needed to be done as he looked in a lot of discomfort.

Motorina · 10/04/2022 19:47

You can't go on a beach holiday without this being sorted. So that means either delaying your departure, or finding a vet when you're there.

Sorry - been there so I know how shit that is. Mine have a talent for hurting themselves at the worst possible time.

bigyellowTpot · 10/04/2022 21:42

I am going to ring my vet in the morning when they're open and hope they can see him. ive tried to bathe and bandage it as out of hours vet suggested but he wont let me. I'm not too bothered about arriving a few hours later to our holiday. He still wanted to play earlier when he saw one of the dc with a ball but cried out a little bit as he must've caught it again. he's ate his food as usual but he's in bed now looking a bit sorry for himself.

And he can weight bare on his leg but the claw is sticking out, looks like it's going to come off to be honest. he won't let me touch it.

Yeah, I always take it to get dealt with because otherwise he catches it all the time and yelps.

As soon as it’s gone he’s fine

bigyellowTpot · 11/04/2022 23:44

managed to get him in the vet this morning and he's had it removed and sorted out. He's much happier and more comfortable now and we have made it to our holiday. he'll soon be running along the beach😊
