Food options for dogs with a sensitive stomach

Hi there, my lovely dog swings between being constipated to having loose stools. She can be anxious pre poo linked to periods of constipation in the past I think. She’s been thoroughly checked out at the vets and nothing physically wrong so I wondered if anyone had any dog food recommendations for dogs with a sensitive stomach? We’ve tried raw food and that definitely didn’t suit her. Any ideas? She’s 3 and a medium sized poodle cross

The only thing my dog can have with no reaction is Royal Canin’s hypoallergenic. We’ve tried him with so many different types of food and this is the only one that works with him.

What kind of food is she eating, how's her appetite? Do you ever see any blood or mucus in her poo?

My terrier reacts with vomiting and pooing bloody mucus if he eats any kind of meat protein, so it might be worth trying to work out if she is sensitive to something in particular. Chicken, beef, gluten and dairy are the common allergens I think.

There are lots of "sensitive" feeds available but they're no good if she's reacting to the meat protein that's in them.

My dog has inflammatory bowel disease and we give her either Royal Canin hypoallergenic or Purina HA.

They have really helped with her stomach issues and her skin is much better too.

Yes my dog is on Purina HA, he does well on it. Vegetarian dog!

My dogs got a sensitive stomach. Recently due to allergies we’ve had to go grain free. itch.com do a dry food with salmon and various other white fish ( I think) it’s really suited my dog ( for a change) you get your money back if they don’t like it

This might help and you can buy a sample pack bugbakes.co.uk/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMInY-Ij-6C9wIVSNPtCh1TNQKwEAAYAiAAEgLivvD_BwE I mix it with a bit of wet food. Or you can just add water.

Thanks very much for your replies really helpful. She’s currently on a fairly bog standard meat with a mixer and we add in a fibre supplement and fluid to try and prevent constipation but it’s a fine balance to avoid the other extreme. I’ve tried her on a few different foods including grain free but maybe didn’t monitor for long enough. No blood in her stools but sometimes a bit of mucus but I put that down to the fibre supplement. She’s got a good appetite and generally eats all of her dinner enthusiastically. I’m not sure whether to try one of the sensitive foods suggested or try and eliminate anything she might be intolerant of. Strangely she won’t walk for me if she needs a poo but is fine as soon as she’s been. Not a problem when my partner takes her out so not thought to be a physical issue after several vet checks.

Hi, my dog is 1 years old and has a very sensitive tummy - loose stools, never constipated. I have tried a few foods, he doesn't seem too keen on kibble. Even some of the foods that are grain free etc still give him a sloppy poo. I have him on Butternut Box now and he seems to be doing great on it. Loves it and no loose poo. I also have some Canagan dry food in the cupboard which is good. I believe Chappie original is very good for dogs with sensitive tums?

I have a 2.5 year old poochon who had exactly the same problems as your dog. He was on royal canin which wasn’t working for him and we took advice and switched to McAdams. It was created by a vet whose dog has similar problems. It is pricey but the best quality and no more upset tummy for my dog. He’s been on it nearly 2 years now. Good luck!

Burns Sensitive Pork & Potato was excellent for our similarly sensitive terrier.

My lab is on Waggs sensitive, vet said he has ibs. He was been sick all the time and losing weight.

Solo Vegetal do an entiurely balanced vegan dog food designed specifically for dogs with intolerences. Wet and kibble versions.

You could try that, which will eliminate all meats to help you see if it is a meat protein intolerence causing the issue?

If it is, you can then introduce a meat at a time, to the feed above, to try and work out which one(s)?

Honeys raw food seems to suit all the dogs I know with sensitive tummies. I also think they have vets available to speak to.

I’ve tried loads for our dog that is prone to colitis.

Raw , grain free, high quality, low quality.

Eventually settled with chappie tins and JWB kibble mixed in. She only has problems now if she finds something to eat that she shouldn’t before I can stop her.

How many times a day is she fed? My dog has a sensitive stomach and we feed her little and often. She gets 5 feeds each day and has settled well with this routine. She poos at the same times each day. Usually twice in the mornings and once in the afternoon.

This feeding routine was recommended by our vet.
