Can I ask - what does your dog do all day?

NarcissasMumintheDoghouse · 05/04/2022 18:33

I look after my daughter's 20-month-old cockapoo one or two days a week.

We feed him three times a day.

We take him for walks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

We have an enclosed garden he can gander around.

We play fight with him for bone chews.

Then we get on with the stuff of life - cooking, work, admin, reading, Sudoku, gardening etc.

And the dog ..... follows me around expectantly.

Do your dogs amuse themselves? Is this one particularly needy? He will eventually flop and sleep out of sheer boredom when I am PC-working and resolutely NOT paying him attention, but hops up the minute I move from my desk.

Our 12 month old is pretty full on, she bounds around with our 4.5 year old DS all day long but She will equally quite happily snooze while I'm in the room, but will follow me around once I'm on the go, she is not expecting anything though, just follows to be nosey/guard.

Flaunch · 05/04/2022 18:42

I have a 14 month old lurcher and pretty much all he does is sleep. His day goes something like

Follow first person up downstairs and get them to serve breakfast, have a wee then back to bed.
Harass owner 1 for walk at lunch time - 3 miles
Sleep
Harass owner two for walk at tea time - 3-5 miles
Scrounge around kitchen for scraps or owners food
Dinner
Sleep
Harass owners to go to bed at 2100
Sleep all night on whatever bed he likes 😂

I get up early at the weekend to do a hobby and he doesn’t even get up with me, just stays in bed with DH 😂

Ilikewinter · 05/04/2022 18:42

Same here, 11 month old collie, DH is WFH and he will follow him everywhere. When im home its like he cant decide who to follow! He goes on a walk early morning then mid afternoon, inbetween he'll deposit toys at your feet then snooze if you ignore him long enough

EisforEmergency · 05/04/2022 18:45

Ours will follow us around until she gets taken out. Then she’ll have a sleep unless I’ve given her a bone in which case she’ll spend the day digging holes to bury it and the dig it up again and again and again.

FairyLightPups · 05/04/2022 18:53

We have two ddogs. They get up early-ish, have breakfast, run around like mad in the garden, get walked, and then snooze for aaages. Then the dogwalker takes them out for the afternoon. When they get back they are so exhausted by the big walk that they sleep in their beds until 5ish! At that point they wake up, play with toys/each other in the garden again, get fed, go for a smaller walk, and then go down for the night.

It helps to have a second dog as they entertain each other! Ddog1 does follow DP everywhere though. I think that's pretty standard.

SirenSays · 05/04/2022 18:55

Mine tends to stick to me like glue. Unless it's really sunny, then he gets slathered in suncream and goes to lay in the garden.

Most days:
We go for a run
Play treasure hunt for his dental chews
I'll set up his bubble machine and leave him to play
Lunch for everyone
Sniff games and Brain games
Then he'll go back to sleep for a while
Dinner for everyone and he'll chill while I clean up.
Some fast tuggy games in the evening
Finally a last run late at night.

Gribbie · 05/04/2022 19:05

4 year old very lazy golden retriever.
Gets up and gets cuddles from the kids while they avoid getting ready for school.
Comes on school run then has a run the the park afterwards.
Sleeps while I WFH, the odd wee in the garden.
Comes on school run to collect the kids.
Sleeps a bit more, might play with the kids a bit.
Eats tea
Bit more napping then off to bed.
I want to get reincarnated as a well loved family dog

I have a Maltipoo, currently on maternity leave. I take her out for 3-5 toilet breaks a day. She has food put down in the morning which she picks at throughout the day. We walk in the afternoon. We play with toys or chase her. She is always touching me if she can be, sleeping with head on me or against me, any way of touching me. The minute I move; she jumps up and follows me, even to the toilet. I think it's partially a breed thing. She's 5.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 05/04/2022 19:11

My nearly 3 yo terrier sleeps most of the morning, gets a walk at lunchtime then sleeps again.

From 5pm he wants to play and go out.

He gets a longish walk in the evening.

Generally he's pretty chilled during the day, he will follow me if I go upstairs or to the loo though!

stargirl1701 · 05/04/2022 19:13

Our 14 month old lab wakes around 6-7am, out for pee, eats breakfast. Then off to work with DH till around 5-6pm. She has dinner and naps in a room where one of us is. Out for a quick walk and pee between 10-11pm.

I had no idea dogs slept this much. I wonder if she is part cat!

Omg are you me and my dog (whippet lurcher)?! Grin
NarcissasMumintheDoghouse · 05/04/2022 19:17

Thanks, all.

I grew up in a rural part of the UK, where there were dogs galore. And they were free to roam.

The dog I grew up with used to have his breakfast, then toddle off up the road to play with Judie and Butch (he was Butch's father, Judie the mum) then across the Common to visit a dog whose name I no longer remember. Then back, via Lady the Corgi on the corner for lunch. Afternoons, he'd sleep or come along with us kids on whatever adventure we embarked upon.

In the evening the dog breeder next door let his Yorkshire Terriers out for a run and they'd come and visit us (four of them) for cuddles before bedtime.

9 month old Lurcher here. Gets an hours walk in the morning - sleeps all day whilst I work from home. Gets a bit livelier around 6, has another walk, has dinner, we do some play and training, sleeps. God I love lurchers.

Leonberger · 05/04/2022 19:26

Mine pretty much all sleep.

Generally they go for a long morning walk, laze around in various places. Potter in and out of the garden, maybe have a bit of a wrestle or chase a ball. Sleep some more.

Go for a afternoon walk but shorter and then sleep again.

The GSD tends to follow me around. The leonbergers absolutely can not be bothered with that.

Happenchance · 05/04/2022 19:29

We play fight with him for bone chews. Do you mean toy bones or edible chews? If the latter, I would stop doing this. Dogs should be left alone whilst eating chews, otherwise they're more likely to guard them. This is especially important if a dog is a type that is prone to resource guarding, which Cockapoos are.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/04/2022 19:30

Mine is four. He gets anywhere between 1-4 hours of exercise a day (I'm a dog walker and he comes to work with me).

When he's not at work, he sleeps. A lot. He'll wake up for his dinner and if he hears the fridge or any rustling packets Grin He has a natural chew most days which keeps him settled and occupies him for an hour or so.

He does follow me around sometimes (especially if I'm going into the kitchen) but generally he'll chill out on the sofa while I do housework, clean, go upstairs etc. He's a lot more chilled now than he was even a year ago.

Trulyweird1 · 05/04/2022 19:34

Poop, Walk, eat, sleep , walk, snack, sleep, walk, poop, mad half hour, eat , hang around the kitchen while we cook / eat, then sleep, move to bedroom, sleep some more.
Labs.

mathanxiety · 05/04/2022 19:37

I don't have a dog but I can tell you what my downstairs neighbour's dog does all day.

He barks and howls for approximately seven hours non stop.

People - don't get a big rescue dog with abandonment issues if ...

1 - you're not going to be home all day, and/ or
2 - you have neighbours.

Ratched · 05/04/2022 19:39

2 Labradors.,...
We get up at sunrise, cos that's when breakfast happens...obs
Then we walk
Have a quick kip.
Walk again.
Mooch around the house to ensure hoovering/dusting/general cleaning is being done to Labrador standard.
Grab a quick nap.
Have a sniffy walk. Don't actually WANT to, but feel obliged, cos it's that time....
Teatime! Yay.
Sleep, need to digest said teatime
Can't really be arsed, so quick wee in the garden before bedtime.
And ....at last.... Relax 😂

Dogs other than old labradors may differ....😁

Soubriquet · 05/04/2022 19:39

5 and 6 year old

They:-
Bark
Play
Sleep
Eat
Bark
Play
Sleep
Eat.

Peppered in with some love me, and I need the toilet, let me out

BestIsWest · 05/04/2022 19:40

One sleeps on the sofa all day keeping half an eye out for cats through the window, waking only to bark at delivery men.
The other is on constant alert for my every need and follows me round like a bridesmaid in case I need his help.

halulat · 05/04/2022 19:46

8 year old yorkie and 1 year old cockapoo.
Up at 6. Toilet in the garden and breakfast.
Walk.
Play fight with each other.
Sleep
Bark at postie/ window cleaner/ random birds or squirrels
Chase birds or squirrels
Repeat
Sleeping during the day is usually as close to humans as possible even when pesky laptops are in the way!

LadyCatStark · 05/04/2022 20:02

Sometimes our 1 year old lab comes to work with me and sometime we have a day out at the weekend but a typical day at home looks like:

Wake up at 7am when mum comes downstairs.
Immediately sit in front of food bowl to make sure mum knows it’s breakfast time.
Eat breakfast.
Go into living room and look pointedly at the TV until mum puts Sky Nature on.
Excitedly greet human brother.
Sit next to human brother while he eats breakfast.
Go out for wee, poo and patrol of garden perimeter to make sure all is in order.
Wait by front door while mum takes human brother to his school bus in the car. Maybe find a nice piece of paper to chew up if can get into dad’s office.
Sit next to mum while mum eats breakfast and has a brew. Begin to feel tired and nap on mum’s feet.
Sit at the bottom of the stairs while mum gets dressed.
Excitedly greet dad and have belly rubs.
Walk to pet shop, choose random animal part, put paws up on counter and drop chew to pay for it, carry chew home.
Bit of chewing, nap til lunch time.
Collect girlfriend from next door and go on nice long walk in the fields with mum.
Try to go into girlfriend’s house for the afternoon but get taken home.
Stand on chair and look out of window to stare at girlfriend in her living room window.
Start to nag mum for walk to get brother from his school bus at least half an hour before we need to leave.
Go and pick brother up.
Have dinner.
Have human dinner.
Sleeeeeeeeeep.

Our dog is nearly 12 , his day is basically eating , playing , walking or sleeping , I would say he plays as much as he sleeps . He has a toy box that he helps himself to and he’s very good at playing alone . His favourite toys at the moment are a plush walrus , was a Christmas present this year and he’s completely enamoured and his log with squirrels in .
