Crate for labrador puppy

Just looking for a bit of advise please as we didn't crate our previous dog. We will be welcoming a labrador puppy soon and would like to get a crate for her as a safe space, to sleep and keep safe while we are out and can't take her.

I'm just looking at sizes and are we best to get one that she would fit in full size right from the start or get a smaller one and see how we go? She won't be crated forever and will have a run of part of the house once we're out of the puppy/teenage stage.

Any recommendations would be helpful as I'd rather pay for one that lasts 😊

We bought a larger crate with a divider to reduce the size whilst pup was small. If you're anywhere near Notts/Sheff/Derby you're welcome to it.

I’d get a larger one and use a divider. You may need to use it when you have her spayed, so the larger one will be handy then.

Thank you! We are a bit further South in Northamptonshire unfortunately so probably a bit far away but thank you so much for the kind offer 😊

Thank you, yes I hadn't thought of when she's spayed. We made a make shift pen for our previous dog when she was spayed (she was a smaller breed so a bit easier).

The crate I bought was a waste of money, he hated it.
I puppy proofed the utility and left him in there, then he progressed to the kitchen.
Much nicer to be able to stretch out on the cool floor in the summer.

The crate will be in our utility room 😊 my worry is chewing in the utility room when we're out.

I would start with a smaller one
Then size up as they grow. I got good deals buying second hand on Facebook marketplace and didn’t loose anything when we cold on. I think a smaller one is cosier when they are little

I would get a large one and use a divider. It seems a real waste to buy a small one - labs grow fast and she won't be in it for long!

We got an RAC crate from B&M for our beagle - it was a large one. He never used it as he hated being crated but size-wise it was perfect for him and would have been fine into adulthood.

We bought a large 36" crate (we have a female who isn't expected to be massive judging by her parents). We were advised by everyone that a smaller crate would be outgrown too quickly. We never bothered with the divider and the puppy doesn't mind. We plan to stop using the crate once we trust the dog to have the kitchen to herself without destroying anything. However, we'll keep the crate for holidays, camping and staying at my parents.

Puppy happy with the crate and chooses to go in herself when she wants quiet time or a nap. We've put her dog bed inside it plus cover it at night so it's nice and dark.

We couldn't find any large ones on FB Marketplace or Gumtree so had to buy one new.

Get a large one and either use a divider or fill the excess space with a large box.

Clymene · 29/03/2022 16:48

Get a big one. I hadn't used my crate since my dog was a puppy but he was very happy to go back into it when I needed to crate him recently. I'm so glad I did it - it's very useful to have a crate trained dog.
