Dog on heat on holiday

My dog has just gone into her first season. Due to go on our first dog-friendly holiday next weekend. I’m going to have to cancel aren’t I?

I suppose it depends where your going? How rural is it and is it full of other dogs?

I must admit I cursed the person who took an entire bitch to a campsite last year in the lakes. More than cursed actually Grin
I have a very mature unbothered boy and even he was whining nevermind the rest of them!

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 28/03/2022 07:25

I would cancel - it will be miserable for everyone trying to look after an in-season bitch on holiday.

You won't be able to take her out properly, no off-lead walks, no playing with other dogs, no days out to dog-friendly places etc.

Ostryga · 28/03/2022 07:45

Depends on the holiday! If you’re in a holiday cottage it wouldn’t be any harder than at home. Walk her early morning and late night, keep on lead at all times (even in the garden of the property when toileting) but you’d have to do this at home.

It’ll be the day trips etc that are difficult. You’d have to see if one of you can pop back to the house periodically/someone stay with her.

I have done a holiday cottage with an in season bitch, and it wasn’t perfect but it wasn’t a disaster either.

Vegansausageroll · 28/03/2022 07:54

The behavioural aspect will be hard to manage if you are anywhere near other dogs. Entire males can sniff out an in season bitch from a long distance away. Certainly no walks or trips near other dogs. Also, some bitches behaviour changes in season.
Another thing to consider, put bluntly, some dogs are still bleeding quite heavily by week 2. The last thing you want is blood stains round the holiday cottage! You can get dog period pants but some dogs hate them as they like to clean themselves frequently.

EdithStourton · 28/03/2022 07:55

Can she go into kennels? I know that the kennels where we leave our dogs will accept bitches in season.

Our two seem to be pretty happy in kennels. The younger one won't eat if she's not happy, and she usually gains weight there, and the older one trots in without a backwards glance.

Readyforthatjelly · 28/03/2022 07:58

Thank you for replies. It’s in a lodge on a dog-friendly campsite. Too late to get any money back for cancellation too. Sad

Oh in that case no way. She'll drive all the other dogs crazy

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 28/03/2022 09:06

On a campsite? No way - you're just asking for trouble if you take her with you.

Can you see if she can stay in kennels or find a dog sitter?

I know it's really last-minute but somewhere might have some space!

Readyforthatjelly · 28/03/2022 09:28

Checking with the dog-sitter now. Fingers crossed!

OP has said now that it’s a campsite…. But @Ostryga I can’t imagine a holiday cottage owner would be thrilled with someone letting an in season bitch toilet in their garden! The next people who stayed there would have an awful time. Most cottage owners who allow dogs do so because they have dogs themselves- and it’ll drive them loopy.
OP, even though it’s too late to cancel, could be worth asking the site if you can move the booking and not lose the money if you can’t find a sitter. Most places are accommodating if it means an in-season bitch is kept away.

Readyforthatjelly · 28/03/2022 16:25

Luckily our lovely doggy day care people have said they can have her. She loves them so will be in good hands, the lodge will remain clean and the other doggos will not be driven wild! Phew!

Thank you for all of your advice- have probably helped to save everyone from having an awful time!

MIL's dog is having its 1st season and there is blood everywhere! The dog jumps up at the windows and scratches at the doors to get out when a male dog is walked past their driveway. She has now bought baby nappies and cut a hole for the tail. They are 10x cheaper than dog nappies too! Hopefully she keeps them on!
Maybe buy some for the doggy day care.

Ostryga · 28/03/2022 16:40

@MrsWinters yes good point, however it was only once and I let the owners know. They seemed fine at the time (and this was 10 years ago!).

Glad you’ve got everything sorted op!

Readyforthatjelly · 28/03/2022 16:40

Oh no. That sounds tough! Good tip about the nappies- I have some dog ones which she rips off after about 5 seconds. I’m now wondering if some baby pull-ups would be a better bet. Luckily it is not too much blood so far- a few drips here and there. Got a carpet of old blankets out just in case. Holding on to the thought that this will be the only season to get through as we do intend to get her done.

How can she go to doggy daycare? Aren't there going to be other dogs there? What about walks?
Readyforthatjelly · 28/03/2022 16:53

They don’t tend to take dogs at the weekend so it will just be their own dog (who is done) and mine in their own home. They are fully aware of the situation and so I imagine will be walking her in the same way that I am- when there are very few other dogs about.

OP posts:
fairylightsandwaxmelts · 28/03/2022 16:59

Ah okay. Hopefully their dog doesn't show too much interest as mine is neutered and definitely knows when there's an in-season bitch nearby Grin
