Which kennels?

DDog needs to go in to kennels soon so we can attend a family event; she can’t come with us. We would also like to have a back up plan for emergencies and such like (I am disabled and occasionally have unexpected hospital stays).

Ddog is almost 3 and has never been in kennels before other than for occasional day boarding. She’s a lap dog and is used to having us around all of the time. However, she is crate trained at night and is used to being left alone for 2-3 hours per day.

We have two options of kennels. I’m looking for opinions on which one you would choose?

Kennel 1:
Local to us (around a 10 minute round trip). It’s a small family run kennels and Ddog attends here for occasional day care. The owners know her and are lovely.

However, they are traditional kennels and the accommodation is very basic. They have a set routine of am/pm walks.

Kennel 2:
Advertised as a pet hotel with upgraded rooms at a cost (E.g. small beds to sleep on, a chair in the room etc). They aim to let dogs out multiple times per day in a secure field (not mixed - just single dogs).

However, this is a bigger kennel business and is almost an hour round trip in the opposite direction. It obviously wouldn’t be ideal in an emergency.

Thoughts?

(Please no suggestions of home boarders or house sitters, we’ve explored those options and they aren’t suitable for our dog).

Go with what you know, in my experience smaller is better. There are in some places people who take in just one dog, at a price

I'd go for the option one where you know the owner and ddog is comfortable with them.

How longs the dog staying for? If it’s just a few days then I’d go for option one. The dogs already familiar with them and a few days of basic kennels will be fine. If you’re going away for a couple of weeks though then I think it’s worth putting the dog in the nicer kennels. It might take a couple of days to settle in but the dog will get to appreciate the nicer surroundings and extra walks to break up being caged for a long period of time

I'd go for where she knows the people and the routine.

It might be a bit more basic but she knows the owners, she probably knows some of the other dogs, and she knows the area and the routine.

You could always try the second option at another time so you have a back-up, but for the first kennel stay I would stick to what she knows :)

Put the dog in one for a day first as a trial and see how they get on?

Have you considered putting him with someone in their own home? Council licensed.

That's what I do with my dog because there's no way he'd cope with kennels.

OP stated home boarding wasn't an option in their post.

She said in her OP that those aren't options for her/her dog and asked that people not suggest them.
