Anyone else with a new pup ?

We've just got an 8 week old lab cross. He is adorable and so loving but I keep worrying I'm doing it all wrong lol.

We're crating him at the mo of a night, our meal times and if we go out (not actually left him yet cos someone tends to be here).

First night my son slept on sofa and he settled within about 20 min and slept til 6.
Last night we tried him with no one downstairs but I gave up after 30 min of crying and came and slept on sofa.
He woke at 4, had a wee and then me and him fell asleep on sofa cos I couldn't face locking him up again. Thinking that probably wasn't the best thing to do but it's done now.

Ultimately we want him to sleep uncrated upstairs, either on landing or in mine or sons room. Obviously need to crack toilet training first though.

All in all I think he and we are doing ok but thought I could see how others with puppies a similar age are doing Smile

I slept on the sofa for two weeks so I could get up quickly for any over night wees. By ten weeks our pup was going 1030-630 so I moved the crate upstairs. 3 months of being crated over night we then put the bed on the floor without the crate and that’s where dpup sleeps
Sometimes she might creep on the bed in the early hours especially as it gets lighter but we could resolve that by putting her back in her bed but I like it so we don’t Blush

PineappleRingo · 26/03/2022 17:26

I haven’t made it clear but the bed that was in the crate we then had in the same place as the crate just without the crate. Night one dpup just went to sleep like normal because she was so used to where she needed to sleep.

Yep 8 week old sprocker called Gary. I have an 8 year old springer too. Pup is crated at night in the utility room with other dog, quiet all night, no issues. A couple of accidents through the day but he is picking up the outside good inside bad thing.

MabelMoo23 · 26/03/2022 23:09

You say looking up at you? Cover the crate!!!

Make it dark and cosy. We have a 10 wk old miniature dachshund puppy - she sleeps straight through from 11pm - 6am and is totally dry at night

TheOriginalNutty · 27/03/2022 16:39

Ah thanks both. We do cover his crate.

Gary is adorable. I'll pop a pic on of Parker.

I was out really late last night and my son said he did cry for about 30 min but then he slept through til 6 😀

@PineappleRingo thats really really helpful. That's the way we need to do it.

Aww bless him! I'm thrilled with how Gary is settling and blown away by how wonderful my older springer is. He is a good lad anyway, as soft as grease but he is just fantastic with the pup. All going well so far!

I've a 14 week lab cross, she sleeps in the crate but in our room. We had our last DDog put to sleep a few weeks ago. She slept in our bed or beside it and I'm hoping that will be the pup eventually.
She sleeps from 11-7 ish and doesn't wake up for a wee. She goes to the back door if she needs a wee or poo.
She's got a bit of separation anxiety going on atm, I going to be out at work tomorrow for the first since we got her so I don't think she's going to to be too impressed.

This is her

@Cocolapew

Awww she is lovely 🥰

Thought we'd cracked the crate training last night as Parker made no fuss at all when I put him to bed, and even when I got up at 1:30 to let him out for a wee, he went back in no problem.

Tonight ......total opposite. He's cried and barked all night

There's always a Puppy Survival thread on here if you want to search for it.
You might like to join it. Lots of solidarity and usually good suggestions

@Cocolapew has you always had the crate in your room ? What did you do when she was still weeing in the night ?

I could only fit the crate in my room if I moved my chest of drawers out.

Ahhh I dunno. Feeling stressed today lol.

Gonna knock the neighbours door later and apologise for the noise and see if he kept them awake too

I think the thing to keep sight of is that it won't last forever. It'll be easier before you know it! I bloody hope 😂

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 29/03/2022 07:57

If the long term goal is to have him upstairs then it makes more sense to start off with him there.

You don't need the crate in your room, but could not go in the hallway or something so you're nearby and can see/hear him but you still get the comfort of sleeping in your own bed?

Cocolapew · 29/03/2022 08:00

She only got up 2 nights for wees, the crate gets lugged up and down the stairs. She won't settle to sleep during the day unless she's put it in.
