Anyone tried a dog claw grinder instead of clippers -precious pooper does not let a clipper near it

Hi there. I have two lovely sausage dogs. However, they are not lovely when it comes to claw clipping. In the last two years only one person (at a grommers) has managed to clip them. Unfortunately that place is now closed. Last time I had to have them sedated at the vets! I neither want to put the dogs through that again just for having their claws done plus it is ridiculously costly.

So, I was looking for other options and saw a variety of dog claw grinders.

Has anyone out there ever tried one? Good? Bad?

My dog groomer uses a Dremel like tool - dog doesn't seem to mind it much

I use a cordless Dremel on my dogs' nails - you need to get them used to it very slowly and carefully, but it gives a far smoother finish that doesn't rip your legs if they jump up, and many dogs tolerate it far better than clippers.

I used emery boards on my uncles dog sometimes to save her going to the vet. I was the only one she would let do anything with them at all but that didn't extend to clipping Grin she used to pull her paw away and give me this look like 'is this some kind of a joke?'

Thanks all. I may just give it a go. @Notanotherwindow my dogs have also mastered a very withering look if I approach them with anything looking like clippers.

Yeah they had to muzzle her at the vets to do it. Not because she bit them but because she'd take their clippers and refuse to give them back.

Not me, but I suggested getting a Dremel to someone I know who's dog was very nervous about having his claws clipped.

He's a nervous rescue anyway, so they never take him to a groomers and claw clipping was a massive issue.

With lots of treats and a slowly, slowly approach he's fine with it now.

*he's fine with the Dremel that should say.

It is usually easier to condition a dog to a dremmel than it is clippers.

You can also get them to do their own nails by training a scratch board in the interim when you are getting them used to the dremmel.

DDog hates anything touching his feet and we have one of these which works very well

I found the dremel a bit loud.

We have this one which is really quiet. My dog absolutely hated having his nails clipped, but with careful introduction took to the grinder really quickly and eventually even started falling asleep while I did his nails.

@TreetopsandTailwaggers Thanks for the recommendation. I have bought one. How lovely that your dog falls asleep! It must be very relaxed
