Hi all, does anyone have any greats tips for the house if you have large shedding dogs? Just trying to prepare ourselves for our new arrival.

TIA

If you have carpets or rugs get one of these they're amazing.

PugInTheHouse · 23/03/2022 08:21

Thank you, yes we have carpets, luckily quite flat sort of ones rather than fluffy. That looks easier to use that the clothes brush style ones.

Slightly damp rubber gloves work a treat on all surfaces.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 23/03/2022 08:49

Wash ddoggy bedding weekly and line dry but ten mins in a tumble drier gets hidden hairs off!

OldTinHat · 23/03/2022 08:52

I lost my ddog almost a year ago and I still find hair absolutely everywhere! I think you'll have to just smile and wave and stop being house proud! Congratulations on your doggo arrival!

PugInTheHouse · 23/03/2022 09:08

Thanks everyone.

So sorry for your loss OldTinHat. We already have a pug so a fair amount of shedding but hes only small so limited fur really. Our new pup will be a big boy and is very fluffy!

As well as the tool that @Cocolapew said upthread, which is utterly brilliant, we bought this for our hideously shedding Jack Russells. Gets rid of loads of hair quickly that would otherwise fall out all over your house. Have to do it regularly though.

The other tool is great for just sitting idly of an evening and scraping at your carpets whilst watching TV, its incredible the amount of hair the hoover missing. Plus kids love using it too!

PugInTheHouse · 23/03/2022 09:30

The link won't work, is it the furminator brush thing? I have ordered one to use on pup, we have a short hair version for pugpup and it's great (and very satisfying)

Embrace it otherwise bit drives you mad. If your have hard floors invest in a robot hoover. That goes around while you are at work

PugInTheHouse · 23/03/2022 09:51

I'm not too worried myself, its more about trying to keep it better for visitors really, maybe I should just provide gift bags containing lint rollers for friends as they leave instead Grin

Depends on the breed for furminator I wouldn’t use on a double coated breed.
But brush regularly, I go over mine every day outside and it really helps and the birds love it. Get them used to being brushed when they are little.
I also have a robot vacuum- I still need to use a proper one, but the robot keeps it at bay.

PugInTheHouse · 23/03/2022 13:07

Ah I didn't realise that, hes an alaskan malamute cross, I was recommended by a pug FB group for my current dog. This is what I have ordered, it's not actually a furminator brand www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01FT8NL3A?ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Would you just recommend a normal brush? N

The best thing ever is a blaster drier. I do mine once a week and it really minimises the shedding in the house plus it also dries the coat quickly if they are wet so no damp dog smells on the floor.
We also brush every few days with an undercoat rake but barely any comes out if they have been blow dried that week!

We got rid of the carpets but the only Hoover that ever worked was the henry. The rest just blocked.

Other than that we just gave up Grin

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 23/03/2022 16:18

Ah a malamute.
Accept your fate op.

2 long haired dogs, got rid of all the carpets. If they looked clean, they still smelt. Got a Shark Pet. Saw another post on here saying how useless they are. I have a mains model
.you have to vacuum daily, quick once over with the damp rubber glove when non dog owning guests are coming round

MrsWinters · 23/03/2022 17:05

For grooming a malamute I’d go undercoat rake and slicker brush. The double layer helps keep their temperature regular so you don’t want to damage it which the furminators can do- they look impressive, and get rid of lots of the coat-but the good bits as well as the bad

SilverHairedCat · 23/03/2022 17:13

Robot hoover. Worth. Every. Penny.

TLIMSISNW · 23/03/2022 17:18

Yep, we find this Groomi great at taking dead hair away without tugging their fur.

Also a rubber broom is awesome. We got this one and think its good. It came with a little hand held brush to do the stairs, not sure if that offer is still on though. We find it really helps to get the hair up out of carpets.

PugInTheHouse · 23/03/2022 20:27

Haha @Easterbunnyiswindowshopping I will be buying that sign Grin

Thank you, all really helpful ideas. I will need to be less slatternly with the hoover that's for sure Grin

Beware bathing too much. The smell of wet ddog lingers way longer than with my non hairy breeds...

PugInTheHouse · 23/03/2022 21:35

Thank you. Bathing a lot does not appeal that much luckily, a giant slippery wolf in the wet room Shock

We hire an enclosed field occasionally and it had a small bog in the middle.. Now usually she hates wet paws.... Not this day..

The first time pugpup went to the park after his jabs it started raining, he was so excited he just rolled around rubbing his head in the mud. We have it on video, it's so cute. Now if it's raining he'll turn straight back round and sit at the front door wanting to go back inside!

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 23/03/2022 21:59

Your new ddog may enjoy the bad weather! Ours sits out in the falling snow. Hates puddles though..
Remember to post pics when you can op!!

PugInTheHouse · 23/03/2022 22:38

I think he's going to love it, I can't wait, pugpup hates missing out so he'll be wanting to go out in the rain if new pup is.

I have a few pics. He was 5/6 weeks in these, he was 7 weeks yesterday and is over 7kg already! He's got enormous paws.
