Gabapentin for dogs

My ancient arthritic dog has been prescribed a trial of gabapentin. The vet explained it all but it’s one of the drugs my DH has been on when his back has been really bad and a little (irrational) voice is screaming in my head. Any experiences of this please?

@79andnotout I’m glad you had those few bouncy months. They just don’t live long enough Sad

@SockFluffInTheBath - our lab has been on Librella for over a year. No side effects. We can tell when she is due the next jab as she limps a bit but as soon as she has it she is fine. She went from being on Metacam plus paracetamol and then the added in Gabapentin to now only needing the Librella. The Gabapentin really didn’t agree with her but I’d have no hesitation in recommending librela.

Sorry you’re going through this it’s so terribly painful watching our paws in pain isn’t it.

My dog (12) was diagnosed with arthritis in her hips. She was given loxicom at first which did nothing then a combo of loxicom and gabapentin (2 x 100mg a day). First flew days she was spaced out, literally flopping on her bed, having accidents, rolling eyes etc but that settled down and she did regain some mobility and I think it eases the pain (she was alert, out of bed, walking round etc) and sped up a little on her walks. I did notice though her appetite dipped a little at times.

After some discussion with the vet we’ve tried librella, not because previous weren’t working but because long term they can have effects on liver and kidney function, plus they wear off. So we found she was stiff / suffering more at times tablets would be wearing off, whereas librella is constant (lasts for 4 weeks from injection) and doesn’t have known long term side effects.

She’s been fine, noticeably less stiff at certain times, and appetite back to normal.

Also have you tried yumove ? This was recommended to us and she has been on this too. Honestly the difference has been unbelievable. She’s gone from being shakey, unsteady with buckling legs at times to gaining strength and stability, improving her walking speed

Thank you @Peridot1 that’s really good to hear.

@Mrsdoubtfireswig (I saw that film on my first ever date Grin ) thank you, it’s reassuring to hear good experiences. He’s been on a glucosamine & chondroitin supplement for about 5/6 years now. It made a surprising difference when he went on it but I think it’s done what it can.

@Peridot1 spammers don't care, I assume they must be bots. Their posts are always the same, a load of fluffy waffle and then a link to a product that they say is the best ever. Wish MNHQ would do something about it, it happens so often

You forgot the fuzzy little emoji they always use!
