Dog boot restraint

What do people use in their car? We’ve currently got a guard/barrier and I have used a restraint that attaches to a harness at the back via the car headrest.
We had an incident today where both dogs got tangled up in harnesses/leads/restraint and it could have been nasty😕
Don’t want to use a crate as they are buggers for jumping out of the car.
One’s reactive and we live on a busy road.

Why don't you want to use a crate, surely that would be the most effective way of stopping them jumping out of the car? Far easier to get a lead on a dog in a crate, but if they're particularly troublesome you just leave their lead on and feed it through the crate, so you can have hold of it before you open the door.

Purpose-built cages in car here, always.

Our girl sits on the back seat with her harness clipped into the seatbelt.

Back seat with a seatbelt here too

Mine are usually in the boot with a fixed guard. They don’t wear leads in the boot but they have handles on their harnesses. I can put a divider between them but generally don’t.
Have tried the harness in the seat belt and the buggers always manage to release them. Leads attached to child seat anchors then back of their harnesses work well.
They are pretty calm Labradors and both well behaved in the car, so getting them in and out is not an issue.

I use one of these song with a dog guard. Means I can lock the dogs in the boot with the boot open if I need to and they can't jump out until I'm ready. I usually leave leads on them and loop them over one of the bars so I can grab them before I open the gates.

It's fully crash tested too so will keep my dogs safe

As you don't want to crate and because one of them is reactive, I would put them in two separate, secure areas of the car to prevent any redirected aggression, squabbles and fights. It also means that in a crash, they don't get scared or or injure each other out of fear/pain.

So, I would probably go with the non-reactive dog on the back seat with a proper seatbelt (over the headrest ones are best) clipped to the harness, and the reactive dog secured in the boot - with a metal boot guard in place as an extra precaution so they can't jump out when the boot is opened.
