Optigen eye tests Labrador breeding

So I have had pups from my dogs previously and we are breeding from our current lab in order to keep one of the progeny (best ever temperament and don't want to 'buy in' a pup). However we will carefully find homes for the other pups who will be KC registered.

However someone has told me that we need to have the bitch and sire optigen eye tested or the KC will not register the offspring? We did get the standard BVA tests done (in addition to the hip and elbow tests) which I believe is recommended but not essential with non-assured breeders. Does anyone know about this other test? I cannot find this on the KC website but the person who is a breeder was very sure we needed it.

Thanks in advance!

I dont think you have to have optigen tests but I could be wrong.

However personally I would not buy from a mating that has not had them done or at least one of them.

If I am correct (I may not be!) the bva tests only show unaffected or affected they do not show if the dog is a carrier.

So you can mate to unaffected dogs and the puppy can still have issues if they are both carriers.

However Optigen screening will be able to determine if the dog is a carrier. So the test results could be clear, unaffected or carrier.

However I am very happy to be told I am wrong on this when someone more knowledgable comes along.

I don't think it is a requirement, when I was looking we saw KC registered puppies without fully health tested parents.

I didn't consider any of them though. Our list of requirements for a lab puppy was good hip scores, low COI, zero elbows, clear eye screening and DNA status for prcd-PRA, EIC, CNM, HNPK and SD2. We wouldn't necessarily have ruled out matings where one of the parents was a carrier, as we have no intention ever to breed from our pup, but the tests were a non negotiable.

Why wouldn't you do the tests?

So are the optigen tests the HNPK and SD2 you are referring to? We have all the other tests you listed (see attached) and have carefully selected a sire with a low inbreeding coefficient with checked elbows, low score hips, unaffected bva eyes plus some dna tests too but I just don't know what this optigen test is. If I need to have it done then I will but trying to work out what it is? Might not be too late for it
Thanks!

Optigen are the company that developed the prcd-PRA test I think - PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) - so i would assume that is what is meant by optigen testing

Oh amazing so it seems she already has it!! It must be that her parents were done
