Behaviour

We are thinking of getting a behaviourist for our lab as really struggling with training. We have looked into this and found a couple of governing bodies that accredited behaviourist register with so will pick someone from them but just wondered what peoples experience of behaviourist are? Good? bad ? worth the money? Also if anyone has any recommendations in the Yorkshire area it would be much appreciated.

It's worth knowing that not all governing bodies were created equally.... I'd opt for someone with APBC, CCAB or ABTC qualifications

We saw a behaviourist and it was absolutely worth the money. One issue completely resolved, another vastly improved, and a third is more management than training.

PollyRoulllson · 15/03/2022 12:15

A qualified behaviourist should belong to one of the above mentions organisations. They should be qualified to at least level 5 but usally MSc level. If not walk away.

All qualified behaviourists will ask for a vet check so it may be worth doing this and then asking for a vet recommendation.

Also does depend on the issue you need help with - some issues may be better sorted with a qualified trainer.

Completely agree with the above posters. One thing to note is that not all vets will recommend well qualified trainers, so ask their recommendations but still check that they're APBC, CCAB or ABTC.

As @PollyRoulllson says, depending on the issue you're experiencing, it may be way cheaper to have some one-on-one sessions with a dog trainer rather than behaviourist. For good trainers I'd recommend looking for APDT qualification, or Dogs Trust Dog School. Trainers can cover a lot of issues, they'll recommend seeing a behaviourist if the problem is more complex and something they can't advise on. It may be worth phoning a local APDT trainer to explain the issues you're having and see if they can help or if they can recommend a behaviourist.

@autienotnaughty that's a shame. If it's training you're after, I've heard good things about People and Dogs: peopleanddogs.co.uk/

It's run by Victoria Cooper: victoria-cooper.co.uk/
