I have a :rescue PomSpitz (about 6yrs) who is extremely fussy with his food. I tried every single food there was when I got him and for an extended time he would only eat Waitrose own brand cheap trays (I know I know).
He eventually went off those and then got excited about raw for a while. Went off that. He can go days without eating. He’s been to the vet and had lots of tests and there’s nothing clinically wrong with him. She said give him smelly cat food to tempt him to eat. He also went off that and was at the point where I was feeding him human food, chicken and rice, sliced turkey or tinned mackerel. But he wouldn’t eat the same meal twice in one day! He’s gone off chicken completely. Gone off salmon. (Im vegetarian by the way so this is not fun!) Out of the blue in desperation this week I tried some lilys trays again and he’s wolfed them down. However I’ve now read in the past couple of years Lilys has been taken over by Nestle and have gone downhill re quality and arent the same as they were before.
Is there a similar small, premium brand that focuses on good quality ingredients and nutrition?
Thank you in advance! Smile

Forthglade? I use it as a topper, but you can use it as a complete meal. I buy variety packs and then they always get a fresh flavour

MrsWinters · 12/03/2022 09:07

Check out the site allaboutdogfood as well. You can filter by food type; wet, raw, kibble etc and get a nutrition rating by brand

Butternut box or Different Dog?

Or Forthglade for non refrigerated.

LolaLolaLolas · 12/03/2022 09:15

Butchers are good.

Orangesox · 12/03/2022 09:16

Millie’s Wolfheart are probably worth a look for you.

troppibambini6 · 12/03/2022 09:27

Definitely butternut box for us. It was a game changer for our dog. He's fussy and is prone to the squits and throwing up. It was recommended to me by a friend who's dog was so so fussy.
He absolutely wolfs it down.
After a week on it his poos were normal and after two weeks I could really tell the difference in his coat.
Also no rancid farts which is a bonus as there was a permanent green fog in the sitting room in the evening before!
I don't work for them I promise Grin

Your dog sounds exactly like mine. Mine would eat something for a couple of weeks and then never again. We tried Butterbox and she did eat it but again not for longer than a month. Butterbox got in touch with us when we cancelled and asked if I wanted to speak to their vet which I did and she to,d me that our dog may be suspicious of food as she was taken from her mother too early. Probably puppy farmed.

After Butterbox I started making my own dog food in the slow cooker and then i freeze it in takeaway containers. I then put it in top of a small amount of kibble which she will eat which we found after getting a free sample at a school fair. After trying about thirty others.

Another thing we have discovered over time is that she won't eat from a bowl. She eats from a saucer with encouragement and if that doesn't work we tip it on to a piece of paper. Junk mail usually.

@LolaLolaLolas

Butchers are good.

Before my puppy training class began and before everyone paid the dog trainer asked us what food we used and anyone who said Butchers was turfed out. ShockShockShock She said it was full of 'nonsense' and that any dog who had it in their system would not be fit to be trained.

She was quite a character.

Apart from anything else, have you seen the price of Lilys dog food? Tesco want £2.50 a can atm. I noticed that the shelf was very full the other day, so I can't be the only person resisting the price. My dog has been suffering from intermittent stomach upsets for some time and has been eating Lily kitchen for several years, although she has never been that keen. Now I am feeding a cheaper food, she loves it and no longer has stomach problems, which may or may not be a coincidence.

Pugfostermum · 12/03/2022 13:37

Country hunter canned is very good.

ISeeTheLight · 12/03/2022 13:39

Edgar & Cooper is very good if you can find it.

Molecule · 12/03/2022 13:41

Our Pomeranian loves Butchers, and its reviews on “all about dog food “ are very good. Added bonus is it’s cheap!

Molecule · 12/03/2022 13:44

@User4099642 are you sure you don’t mean Bakers? That is full of rubbish (though most dogs seem to think it’s tasty rubbish), Butchers appears to be pretty much all meat (possibly the bits fussy humans don’t fancy).

WhiteXmas21 · 12/03/2022 13:49

Natures Menu wet cartons; Barking Heads pouches - both go down well here .

Stellaris22 · 12/03/2022 13:51

We feed Butchers tins and can't understand why anyone would be so against it. It's a fantastic food for a decent price.

Shock Oh maybe! Sorry. Blush

It was so completely mad when it happened! People had to shuffle out of the room.

XingMing · 12/03/2022 13:57

Another vote for Forthglade. Three dogs over 30 years have thrived on it but they were all Labs.

nearlyspringyay · 12/03/2022 14:04

Burns is great, I have a diabetic, pancreatitis prone senior. He loves it.

We were previously on Chappie since diabetes diagnosis and he has never been better although it gets looked down on a lot. They changed the formulation so it was higher fat and no longer suitable.

The ingredient comparison in Chappie v Hills vet diabetic food was interesting, Chappie came out better, and less than half the price.

Different foods suit different dogs but it doesn't have to be ££££££££££

Molecule · 12/03/2022 14:30

My Patterdale, despite being a thug, has a sensitive tum, and has been fed exclusively on Chappie for 4 years. I’m always congratulated on his fine physique and condition. However I don’t think it’s especially tasty, and the Pomeranian isn’t very taken with it, he much prefers Butchers.

Okbutnotgreat · 12/03/2022 15:03

Crave is quite good I think and currently on offer at Tesco for £1.50 a can. DDog eats this and raw food depending on fussiness on the day.

OnTopOfThePiano · 12/03/2022 15:30

We really like Forthglade and you can mix flavours do they don’t get bored

GuyFawkesDay · 12/03/2022 15:33

Mine likes the forthglade and the nature's menu(?) Country Hunter one. Only a topper of about 2 tablespoons a meal though.

Shouldhavebutdidnt · 12/03/2022 15:35

Pooch & Mutt?

One dog eats it properly & the other gets it to disguise their medicine before having their hypoallergenic food!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/03/2022 15:36

My fussy dog also has Forthglade

LadyCatStark · 12/03/2022 15:39

Another vote for Forthglade. They do lots of flavours. Aldi do a Forthglade copy which scores highly on all about dog food and a Lily’s Kitchen copy which isn’t on the all about dog food website yet. It’s their Langhams brand not their Earls brand which scores terribly.
