Hugely Worried About Pup...

I'll preface by saying that I'm not asking for advice as such, more just venting and info on potential shared experiences as i'm panicking about poor puppy at the minute.

Youngest pup is only 13 weeks (large breed). He became unwell with D&V last Thursday and has been at the vet in hospital since Saturday morning. They've been giving him IV fluid and anti-sickness but we're 6 days in and no real improvement. He brighter and eating on the anti sickness but very flat when it wears off - eating a bit and no sickness but very listless. The diarrhea continues 3+ times a day...

They have now decided to try treating him for Giardia as his diarrhea is now apparently indicative of this. It's no longer black but green. Today he won't eat but maybe due to the Giardia meds and antibiotics

They want to keep him in while he's still having diarrhea and not eating sufficiently. This will be night 5. He is insured but I am worried sick quite literally.

He's lost weight too which makes it seam worse. I am visiting every day but it's heartbreaking. The vets don't seam overly concerned (and admittedly even I wasn't initially) but we're nearly a week in and I'm starting to panic that we could lose him.

Really sorry to hear this!

Our pup (small/medium breed) had similar at a similar age - he was tiny and it was scary. Wouldn't eat much, would shake and horrendous D&V.

They put him on antibiotics and probiotics and the whole thing probably lasted a fortnight. He's now a fully grown little terror, very far removed from the shaky little pup wrapped in a towel feeling sorry for himself. If the vets aren't too worried, try not to worry yourself and hope he's okay soon!

@mmarket thank you for that. My rational brain tells me he's in the right place and he's not at deaths door, but even though he's not physically small he's still very much a baby. It's just awful isn't it!

Paw hold here.

Mine was admitted for around 2 weeks once with severe D&V as a young dog. It's heartbreaking to not have them with you but fingers crossed he is back with you soon.

That's really tough op. How long have you had pup. Any other cases local? If you have a google there has been a really nasty dog vomiting bug going round. I hope that you see some improvement soon.

JengaCupboard · 10/03/2022 09:42

@Peasandcabbage I've had him for 5 weeks, he went down very quickly over a period of hours having been fine before. Yes I have read lots about this bug doing the rounds, it's highly likely to be something like that. He hasn't been out an awful lot due to his vaccinations not being completed until about 3 weeks ago but we live rurally and he does have form for eating everything if not supervised CONSTANTLY. That being said they don't think its a toxin or a blockage after bloods and 2 scans...

He's actually a bit brighter today so I shall go over later and see what the situation is.

My old girl is similar but she has severe inflammatory bowel disease. We are managing it with an HA diet, probiotics and B12 supplements. She has just got through her latest crisis. I’m sure your pup will get through too.

biggreenhouse · 10/03/2022 09:52

We had a similar scary 2 weeks with ours around a Similar age, he ate fox poo, dead things, rubbish out the bin - anything to make himself violently ill. Sending you good vibes, I'm sure he will pull round soon. we always have a paste of probiotic in the house now too, as helps any sign of a dodgy tummy in future.

BoodleBug51 · 10/03/2022 09:58

Mine was really really ill for around 5 weeks when he was around a year old. It was horrendous, and I still can't believe he got through it. He had giardia because he's a shit for getting in dirty water. I now always keep Pro-Kolin paste in the house so he can get a dose immediately if he has a loose tummy just in case.

If the vet's aren't overly concerned, I'd be reassurred. They see this all the time, and if his bloods don't indicate anything toxic then fingers crossed.

Hope he's better soon.
