Hi all, please can you help name this beautiful pup. He is almost certainly going to be ours in a few weeks.

He is an alaskan malamute/wolf dog cross. We would really love a wolf type name.

TIA

Please name this pup!

PugInTheHouse · 02/03/2022 15:17

Yes dpug will be OK, he does 2 hrs some days although obviously wouldn't do the same type of exercise of course, he potters round the park, mainly glued to my ankle then has the odd mad run around with his friends. He won't chase a ball or anything. He's quite fit for a pug.

We can walk them separately too if need be.

This is our pug, there will be a big size difference! He has met the dad of pup, they got on fine together but then pugpup is generally great with other dogs.
@Easterbunnyiswindowshopping the pug will think he is bigger than wolfdog anyway Grin

@Happenchance why? I want to know the bad stuff also. My friend owns the mum and dad and they are lovely dogs.
An Alaskan malamute/wolf dog cross sounds like a lifestyle rather than a pet. I doubt that I would be able to provide one with the physical and mental stimulation that it needs to be happy.

I assume you've researched the traits of both Alaskan Malamutes and Wolf dogs. If not, here's a starter for 10 about Wolf dogs:
www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/looking-after-your-pet/all-pets/hybrid-breeds#:~:text=There%20are%20currently%20two%20breeds,Czechoslovakian%20Wolfdog. There's no guarantee which traits the puppy will inherit but I would prepare for the worst. Have you planned what you would do if the dog can never be left alone, has a high prey drive and can never be let off lead, unless in a fully secure area?

Is his father overweight? He looks it in that picture, but that could be because he's lying down. I ask because I've known people with high energy dogs who deliberately make them overweight to reduce their exercise tolerance.

Have you looked into the cost of insuring a Wolf dog cross? I imagine it's high.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 02/03/2022 17:22

Please do not send me any information no matter how much I beg. .. They are a lifestyle choice. Ours is very loving. And very very quiet. Not sure I could handle a noisey one! !

He’s gorgeous, Wolfie!!

Wolfiefan · 02/03/2022 17:27

We have a wolf dog near us and it’s a bloody menace apparently. I wouldn’t have one. I have wolfhounds but that’s a whole other story. Do you have land to exercise it on etc?

PugInTheHouse · 02/03/2022 18:07

Thanks @Happenchance yes I have done lots of research but research by reading info is different to actually owning them I think. I like to have the online info and also real life stuff also.

The father isn't overweight, that's just the way he is laying.

We have space to exercise him and we are fit enough to do so but my biggest worry is about them not being able to be left alone. Our dog now is extremely clingy and we are constantly working on improving this. We never need to leave him long but we need to be able to do the odd couple of hours here and there.

@PugInTheHouse if by clingy you mean separation anxiety then don’t get another dog. You need to sort that first.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 02/03/2022 18:11

Ours is fine left but as I said doesn't bark or vocalise at all.
She goes into kennels when we go away. Lots of off lead time which we don't do!

PugInTheHouse · 02/03/2022 18:14

We have house sitters for holidays which works out well.

We have a lot to think about and there is definitely no pressure for us to have him from the owners. The situation with the pups is an unusual one but we don't have to commit till/if we are fully certain.

We hadn't considered getting another dog until these pups. Getting any dog is such a huge decision isn't it, let alone a large dog.

That's quite a leap, going from not considering a dog to considering a Wolf dog cross Grin Good luck with whatever you decide!
PugInTheHouse · 02/03/2022 21:16

@Happenchance Lol, that was badly worded. I meant we weren't looking for one at this stage. We had talked about another pup at some point.

Brilliant suggestions. So many to choose from.

Thank you!
