Barking at night (crate)

Eatsleeprock · 01/03/2022 22:59

Our 5 month old miniature poodle has started barking at night once he has been put to bed in his crate. This is new as up until now he has been reliably sleeping from 10 to 7 once he is in his crate. My DH doesn’t tend to have the same problem when he puts him down for the night, just me. He has recently been to the vet and his health is good. He is teething a lot though. We check him once in case he needs the toilet. We are then ignoring the barking but it can last a long time (over an hour) before he quietens. Any suggestions would be welcome as it is stressful and noisy for us and neighbours.

Aww can you not let him in your room he may be frightened, you can buy dog teething gel too if you think he's teething. X

Have you room for a dog bed in your room?

He's barking to communicate something so I don't think it's fair to ignore him (not fair on the neighbours either).

If he doesn't tend do it for DH, what is it that he does differently to you?

I would also mentally run through the following checklist to make sure all his needs are met:

  • is he hungry?
  • does he have access to water in his crate? (dogs should never be deprived of water, even at night)
  • is there light disturbing him? If so, you can cover his crate with a blanket.
  • is he cold?
  • would he like a blanket to burrow under?
  • if he misses you, have you tried putting in some of your clothes?
  • is noise disturbing him? If so, what about leaving the radio on or playing white noise for him.
  • does he need the toilet?

If all his basic needs are met it could be that he's going through a secondary fear stage (common) and he's suddenly scared to be alone. If that's the case, you can either go back to sleeping in the same room as him, or move his crate upstairs so he can see and hear uou.

Sorry but if I was your ndn I would have put your windows in by now!
Scrap the crate and be there for your ddog.

He’s missing you. He obviously isn’t as bothered when your DH leaves him so it’s you he’s become most attached to.
Can you not have him in your bedroom? Either in his crate or in a bed on the floor next to you? ….though have to confess two of my smallest sleep on the bed with me Grin

Put his bed in your room. End of problem.

Why would you not just get him a dog bed?
