1yo Spaniel getting spayed this week!

Aria20 · 28/02/2022 19:01

My spaniel is being spayed this week. She had her first season at 8.5 months and has just turned 1 and is now mid season so we've decided to spay.

What should I expect when I pick her up? Will she be grumpy and in pain? I've been told they will send her home with pain relief for the next morning and a buster collar. Does anyone recommend a vest/suit instead of the collar? Do you think I should set up her crate again? She hasn't used it for months but wondered if she might prefer to hide away from my 4yo dd in peace? What are they normally like the next days after surgery as in will she be wanting walks or not? How long is it usually until they return to normal activity levels?

I know it's routine surgery and best for her to be spayed as she is a pet not for breeding but I can't help but worry she might have a personality change after??? Anyone had this?

My girl has just been done and is doing great. She was pretty groggy when we picked her up and for the following day or so. After that it was a case of trying to keep her calm and sticking to on-lead walks. We had her wear a t shirt that the vet gave us which was brilliant and much better than a cone and she took metacam for pain relief for about a week afterwards.
She’s still her sweet playful self. Can’t see any change in her other than her shaved tummy and healing scar. I’m relieved we had it done and she’s out the other side.

@PearlyGirls thank you for that. Hopefully we'll have a quick recovery too!

My DDog was spayed recently and I was very too.when we collected her, she was very drowsy and I had to carry her in from the car, but she became more alert over the next couple of hours. We kept her in her crate for the first day and tbh she didnt really want to be anywhere else - shecwas very quiet and subdued for a couple of days. We just took her out to the garden on her lead every couple of hours, for toileting.

We used a medisuit, rather than a buster collar, for the first ten days, which worked very well and she seemed to barely notice it. You have to remember to undo the end (poppers, like a babygro) when you take her out to wee. One time I forgot Blush. Its useful to have two bodysuits - wash one, wear one. You must undo it every day to check the wound for redness, pus etc.

We were given a liquid solution of painkillers to give each day. My dog wasn't very keen on it, so we had to mix it in with her favourite food to make sure she ate it - chicken and rice, scrambled egg etc is good to tempt the palate.

We were told to keep to short, on-lead walks for the first ten days, which we did. She was fine with this for the first five days or so, but after this she was desperate to go on longer, off-lead walks, and got quite bouncy at home. We stuck to the rules but she didn't like it!

I would say she seemed back to normal after about five days post op, but we still had to be careful until ten days post op. Three months on, there is no discernible personality change - although I have been told that her coat is likely to become more woolly over the next year or two.

Good luck!

Aria20 I seem to be on same timeline as you. We had 1st season at 9 months and getting spay this week. I am also worried about a personality change. And so worried about the procedure on the day and having to leave her with strangers. We have a pre op check tomorrow so I have lots of questions for them!

Aria20 · 28/02/2022 19:37

Thanks @WaltzingToWalsingham where did you get the medisuit from? I've looked on Amazon but reviews seem mixed! Mine will miss long walks and offlead freedom but I see it is a good opportunity to practice nice loose lead walking...hopefully!

We have a male entire dog so our baby was spayed at 6 months before her 1st season. We got a surgery suit for ours, a collar would have freaked her out. She was horribly groggy, and unfortunately had an adverse reaction to the Metacam so the first few days were a bit rough. We just gave her lots of cuddles, and fed her boiled chicken/veg for the 1st day so she didn't overload her stomach. Within 5 days she was back to bouncing off the walls, and it got very stressful then trying to make sure she didn't pop her stitches.

Aria20 · 28/02/2022 19:40

@Turquoisesol we don't even have a pre op! I asked about that and they just sent me info saying when to give last meal the day before etc... I feel sad having to leave her from 9am when she likely won't have it done until lunchtime... I hope she doesn't howl or bark for hours while she's waiting as she's used to company and not been crated for months!

We had a medivest which was far more comfortable than a collar...both of mine have been groggy on the day but fine after a good night's sleep, the issue is trying to keep them from jumping about.

My vet said it was better to take them on a few short lead walks for a good sniff than have them charging around the house because they're bored so that's what we did. We also hid their food in snuffle mats/put it in frozen bones for enrichment.

Turquoisesol · 28/02/2022 19:43

Do you think they will have to wait for hours in crate until their ops? Really hope not. I have image in my head of her being crated next to another dog who barks at her all morning . Hope the vets handle the whole thing well.

hellcatspangle · 28/02/2022 19:43

They sell the medivest at the vets, they'll put her in one if you request it (think it was about £22 at mine)

Aria20 · 28/02/2022 20:13

@Turquoisesol I'm assuming they are crated until their turn as otherwise where would they be kept and who would supervise. It is sad for them but I suppose it's only one day and we can give lots of comfort later....I've been told there are only 3 surgeries booked in on the same day as ours Wednesday unless emergencies crop up and it's likely she'll be "done" around lunchtime and then they'll wait for her to come around and ring me with an update but not to expect to collect her until around 5 but they are open until 8 so if she's very groggy or surgery is delayed/complications she might be there all day from 9am!

Turquoisesol · 28/02/2022 20:31

Ah, I will ask all these questions tomorrow. Ours is a very busy surgery so not sure she will get much special treatment and will be just one of many who are in. Looking forward to having it all done and dusted anyway.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 01/03/2022 07:32

@Aria20 The medisuit we have is manufactured by a company called Suitical and we got it from our local pet shop, about £20. They had a range of different sizes and the pet shop said we could exchange it if it was the wrong size. The fabric is soft and stretchy, so quite easy to fit.

Aria20 · 03/03/2022 14:40

@WaltzingToWalsingham thank you for the recommendation got one same day delivery from Amazon and it's great, she hated the cone wouldn't move or even sit/lay down with it on but she's happy in the suit.

@Turquoisesol so far all ok. Yesterday I dropped her off at 9, they rang at 1 to say she was in recovery and it had all gone well but she'd had anti sickness injection as the anaesthesia made her sick. I collected her at 4.30 and she was very sorry for herself, gingerly walked to me with a tiny slow tail wag instead of usual crazy! She whimpered a bit in the car so I drove slowly, she ate a small portion of salmon and rice then slept mostly. This morning she was a bit more with it and has been out on lead in garden for toilet but again mostly slept. I expect tomorrow will be harder as she's still supposed to be resting so soon she will be getting fed up!!

Spay went well. The vets said she coped wel on the day which was what I was most worried about. When I went to collect her she looked drunk but actually quite happy! She just seems sleepy now. Doesn’t like me trying to unpopper the surgical suit though so that’s going to be fun! Not sure how long that needs to stay on for

Turquoisesol · 08/03/2022 09:22

Aria20 how are you getting on? I wonder if I need to wash the vet smell off her before mixing with other dogs. Probably overthinking. Think it’s too early for a bath anyway

PollyRoulllson · 08/03/2022 11:37

I wouldnt worry about the vet smell the other dogs will sniff her all over anyway and better to keep her wound dry.

Aria20 · 08/03/2022 11:39

We are all good @Turquoisesol had post op check yesterday and all healing well. She can now go for on lead walks of 20-30 mins but no offlead running around yet. I bathed her the day before surgery so she won't get another bath for a good few weeks as she won't be running around in the woods before then so shouldn't need one! I didn't think of vet smells but she was fine with my mums 2 in tact boy dogs yesterday!

Turquoisesol · 08/03/2022 11:52

Ok that’s good to know. Turqoisepup seems mostly back to her normal self. Just trying to restrict walks a bit now. I was surprised she was happy to go in to vets for check. Obviously not as traumatic an experience as it could have been

MightyMeerkat · 14/04/2022 16:04

Hi. Can I ask when you let yours off the lead in the garden after her spay? The vet doesn't want to answer the question! I've been told that short on lead walks are now fine. And no off lead walks for 3 weeks. But I'm not sure when I can let her off in the garden. Or should I treat it as the same. Thank you.

Tulipvase · 14/04/2022 16:15

@MightyMeerkat

My lab was spayed this week and we have just been for a post op check. The nurse also said keep lead on in the garden but I have just been going out with her to make sure she doesn’t run around. I think she said to keep on the lead until we send a photo on day 10:for them to check.
I think I have the laziest lab in the world though so I’m not too worried about the running around.

MightyMeerkat · 14/04/2022 16:30

Thank you. I have an energetic spaniel so I may stick to a lead in that case, at least for the next few days.
