French bulldog choking all the time

ShittyFingers · 28/02/2022 09:18

Frenchie is 6 years old. He’s always been one for choking randomly but these past few days it seems he’s constantly coughing (chalky cough), trying to clear his throat, choking and on occasion vomiting.

It’s not kennel cough and he doesn’t have the bug. What could it be?

I’d take him to vet.

@JayAlfredPrufrock

I’d take him to vet.
He’s booked in for this afternoon, just hoping someone might be able to suggest what it could be?

They are prone to choking due to their flat face. Did you not know this before getting one? I feel so sorry for these dogs when I see them, but they're fashionable so who cares about them being bred 🤷‍♀️

How do you know the op didn't rescue the dog? Ffs. The ones that exist still need loving.

@pawpaws2022 thank you!

Maybe @joydivisionovengloves71 believes that all the ones that currently exist should be left to rot? Hmm

This might help

Btw I’m not making a point about the breed just a useful link.

pumpkinpie01 · 28/02/2022 09:41

I haven't a Frenchie but my lab x did this and she had swallowed a rubber foot from the slow cooker and it was stuck in her throat . I would put your hand down her throat if I were you have a feel around.

bunnygeek · 28/02/2022 09:42

He might need soft palate surgery. The shortened muzzle just means all the palate that should be going along their long muzzle, is pushed down their throat instead :(

You didn't say that he was a rescue

No, of course existing ones shouldn't be left to rot 🙄

ShittyFingers · 28/02/2022 09:57

Why would I say he was a rescue? What’s that got to do with anything?!

Because anyone buying one as a puppy is contributing to a massive welfare issue. It helps to clarify what you do know when posting for advice, and had you said 'rescue' most posters would have concluded that you'd know at least a bit about the health issues.
ShinyPikachu · 28/02/2022 11:30

We have an elderly Shih Tzu who often has similar sounding attacks and he'll cough until he's sick. It's often when he gets overexcited.

I once read online that when it happens, cover their mouth and nose with your hand. It apparently forces them to swallow and stops the coughing/wheezing attack. It's worked every time for our dog so far.

Heartbrokenformydog · 28/02/2022 11:54

As dogs age, and particular brachycephalic breeds earlier than others, they can have a “collapsing throat”. Makes them gag and cough. The trick a PP wrote above can help.

Hoppinggreen · 28/02/2022 11:56

Years of very bad breeding is probably the issue here.
You need to go to the vet, hopefully insurance will cover the expensive operations he may need.

UnderTheSkyInsideTheSea · 28/02/2022 13:30

Look up collapsing trachea.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 28/02/2022 13:43

OP doesn't have to justify why she has a French Bulldog Hmm

No wonder people get put off posting on here - there's certainly no way I'd come on here for advice, lol.

OP - it could be all sorts. Kennel Cough (they can get it even if they're vaccinated), an obstruction in the throat, an issue with his soft palate or he's just a bit under the weather. It could also be reverse sneezing - have a look on YouTube to see if it sounds like what your boy is doing, maybe?

Hopefully the vet has a good look and you get some answers :) if it's an issue with his trachea or soft palate he may well need surgery to correct the problem.

MrsWinters · 01/03/2022 10:04

May be something stuck, could be a virus, could be something specific to the breed.

If you have a vet appointment they’ll be able to give you a good idea. In the meantime I’d put half a teaspoon of honey in a small amount of warm water and offer it to drink. It’s very palatable, will soothe the throat and if there is a bit of debris may dislodge it.
