Switching from raw to... What?

I really don't want to raw feed anymore but I fear my dogs won't eat anything else.

I find it too time consuming, expensive and a bit gross tbh.

Add to the mix that my boy is allergic to chicken, turkey and wheat.

What's the best dry food about?

Is this on the basis of exclusion diet and then challenge? If it is then a hydrolysed diet is going to be your best options as ordinary commercial diets do not sterile between flavours so there will be contamination.

Food is such a personal thing and there is such a wide choice it makes it harder.

Ziwi peak is the closet to raw you will get in a dry food but that may not be what you are aiming for.

Millies Wolfheart are very transparent in their ingredients so really easy to avoid your dogs allergens.

Depends on your price bracket as well.If you are happy to buy online or would rather pick up locally.

all about dog food site may help you on ingredients and pricing

It's based on an intolerance test then avoiding the stuff he tested positive for. Since doing so he has stopped itching and his fur has grown back.

We started raw as it just seemed to best way to avoid his allergies but the raw food is just so hard to keep on top of. I have so much going on right now, I keep forgetting to take it out to defrost, to label it, to order it Sad

Just looked at ziwi, completely unaffordable with 3 dogs unfortunately

Do any suppliers near you do prepped&frozen raw food? Might cut out the time and disgusting prep but still allow your dog to eat raw? we do it and it doesn't work out much more than doing it yourself

I already have them on complete raw meals. I don't do my own.

Being on raw they will be on a high protein diet.

Millies food is pretty high protein but they also do a 80/20 mix which is similar protein to raw. Their highest protein mix is Hunter food which has none of your dogs allergens in it. But you will have to order online not sure if that is what you want to do.

Personally if changing food from raw to dry I would move to high protein dry and then over time if I wanted a more carb diet change once the dog is used to dry food. Higher carb lower protein are generally cheaper but you may have to feed your dog more of it. Hence worth looking at the link above to work out your daily budget and seeing what is available in that price bracket.

Other companies do do 80/20 but will be more money that Millies (I think)

I'm going to buy a small bag ilof millie hunter and see how we get on.

Can I still add little extras to it like sardines or egg?

OP posts:
PollyRoulllson · 24/02/2022 19:19

You can add sardines and egg but nutrionally they will not need it.

Millies are amazing at customer service so give them a call and they will work out the best deal and food for you. eg if you want to add eggs and sardines a lower protein may be better.

Thankyou. I'm just thinking after being on raw so long I'm not sure they will ago for plain kibble with nothing juicy added!

You can also add chicken broth (allergies permitting) to raw food

Millie's manufacturer a Turkey diet so there will be significant risk of cross contamination. It would be worth putting the affected dog on a hydrolysed diet and then the other two on another cheaper diet, I would encourage you to look at the WSAVA information relating to grain free diets being implicated in dilated cardiomyopathy myopathy particular if any of yours are susceptible breeds. WSAVA Statement.

Our dog is the same. She’s stopped itching on raw. But, for camping, we have used wet food and she’s been fine on that too. But, raw poops are 1000x better!

We recommend for single proteins:

Country hunter tinned
Rocco trays
Wolf of Wilderness tins

Eden fish cuisine or their semi moist range.

There is really is little good alternative to a raw meal when it comes to dogs and in fact cats for that matter. Wet cooked is ok for a few days but kibble really is an awful choice for any dog because its not their natural diet or anything close to it.
I've always bought complete raw meals from Dogfoods4u which has saved the hassle of trying to source raw ingredients and balance each meal to meet the nutritional requirements of my dog.
