Hi there have been loads of hunting dogs attack and Maul dogs where I live and I'm paranoid now when walking my sweet boy . He's a ten month golden retriever who would never fight back . I'm just wondering what's legal to use and any ideas what I can do with f it ever happened. I would kill for my boy and as much as I love a Somali if his life was at stake I wouldn't think twice than killing the other dogs involved. I know not a nice post but this is what it's come too unfortunately

Thanks, @thegoldenone. That poor bloody dog.

I don't think, though, that this sort of attack is something you have to worry about when exercising your dog in the usual dog-walking places.

Sadly the attack on the retriever was in Northern Ireland, where it is still not illegal to hunt with dogs. OP, if you are in Wales, it is illegal, so you can report to the Police and RSPCA as well as the dog warden.

I’ve only seen some of the posts, but am I right in thinking they don’t know who he belongs to or exactly what happened? Poor, poor boy, his injuries are horrific.

Hunting with dogs: it's legal to use dogs on rats and rabbits all over the UK. Our old terrier was the offspring of farm ratters - it's a lot better for the rats and the wildlife than laying poisoned bait.

With the land owners permission, for pest control. I used to know a Patterdale breeder who bred solely for farmers for pest control purposes.

“ The hunting of rats/rabbits is exempt provided it takes place on land that:

– Belongs to the hunter, or

– He has been given permission by the occupier or, in the case of unoccupied land, by the landowner.

If the groups of hunting dogs the op is talking about are being worked in public spaces or on council/state owned land though, they are breaking the law.

I should add that I agree, ratting terriers are a much more environmentally efficient and effective way of controlling rats. I know of several pet terriers that can and will despatch any rats on their property. In fact some people I know specifically chose terriers as pets, as they have rat issues relating keeping chickens.

I wish we had had a terrier during lockdown when rats starting invading homes and gardens locally during lockdown, for the first time I’ve ever known (my family have lived in this house for over 50 years). We ended up with them getting into our house. It cost a fortune to get rid of them through pest control services and I wasn’t at all happy about having to have poison on our property.

Thankyou all for your comments . Unfortunately this attack is not uncommon where I live as it's just mountains and countryside . I have looked at private fields but the nearest one is two hours away 😭. I have been taking my boy to the cemetery where I feel safe and we havnt come across any dogs at all. That poor boy on Facebook who got attacked isn't doing too good at the moment either . I can't stop checking up on him. I would die for my dog . I know that's crazy because before I had him I don't think I would think this way about dogs. But it's mad how much they get into your heart. I just don't understand why you can't take a weapon out t protect yourself and dog . It's not as if I'm going to use it if he just got in to any fight but if a pack of dogs were ripping him apart I would try my hardest to kill them all before they killed him. I'm going to keep going to the cemetery as much as I can but it's not possible everyday because it closes before I get home from work 😭. These hunting dogs are out in the day and on walks but obviously because they are trained to hunt they are going for anything that moves. And the ones around where I live are like that and just in my street there are two people owning around 16 in total

The amount of times the police have been informed is unreal but guess what ! Nothing ever gets done

Trail hunting is just a "cover" as you know , report the hunt anytime you see them out , they barely control their own dogs . Some got killed on a train line recently , then there's the attacks on cats , farmland etc ... I would be terrified to walk my three into a situation like that ... one of mine is reactive anyway and it would be a bloodbath
It's such a shame you have that worry where you walk as it sounds a beautiful place to live
