Why does she do this?

Bella hates the living room door closed even though she can come in through the dining room if she wants as that is left open. She can open the door anyway as she knows just the right spot to jump at to open it.
Tonight she's upstairs with ds having snuggles on his bed. I've quietly closed the living room door three times because of the draught from the hallway. Three times I've heard her jump off the bed, claw open ds's door, come downstairs open the living room door before turning round and going straight back up to ds's bedroom Grin Anybody else got dogs with ridiculous quirks?

Haha that's funny she's keeping an ear out for you. Often if we are all in the same room ours will sleep in a really awkward position with a paw on the door - not to protect us from any intruder as my son thought but to prevent any of us abandoning her by sneaking out of the room lol!

Yes! My old boy does this. We live in an old draughty house and he absolutely hates the living room to kitchen door being closed. He will get up, open it and go back to his bed over and over. Quite apart from he draught issue, it’s really annoying if the washing machine is on a spin cycle or the tumble drier is on.

I think it’s because historically we always had a dog-gate across that doorway, so never had a need to close the door, so he is just more at ease with it open, as that’s what he’s used to. We got rid of the dog-gate when he became elderly, to give him more freedom to pick where he wants to sleep and because we mainly used it as a kind of double gate system, so there was never a risk of one of our dogs getting out of the front door. (These days he doesn’t even look up if the front door is open and even if he did show an interest he is incredibly slow and easy to stop.)

Bella's getting on as well as she's twelve now. It's the worst door for draughts that she wants open as well. I'm happier to humour her when she is in the living room but when she's not even on the same floor it's a pain.

My boy is just shy of sixteen and a half, which I suppose explains it, as he was used to the door being kept open 99.9% of the time for 15 years.
