Hi can anyone recommend a good grain free dog food? Got a 13m old lab he's currently on AVA which costs about £35 for 15kg. Something in a similar price range? Ideally calming!!

Why grain free?
Legumes are not a natural food for dogs, are often difficult to digest and grain free foods have been associated with heart disease due to imbalanced nutrient profiles.

I'd stick with a nutritionally balanced food from a company that invests in nutritional R&D

Girlintheframe · 22/02/2022 07:08

I pay £45 for 12 kg for Millie's wolf heart.

Best to check the portion size as although a food may be more expensive it can work out cheaper per meal due.

Not sure about calming tho? Could dog have allergies which are making him more hyper? If our dog is fed something he is intolerant too he end up scratching, ground surfing etc.

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 22/02/2022 07:09

Akela wholeprey dog loves it good ingredients

Reddishes · 22/02/2022 07:38

We moved our dog onto Millie's Woolfheart. As PP said more expensive.
Are you asking re calming as she's a bit hyper? Might be worth checking if the protein content is too high .

autienotnaughty · 22/02/2022 08:55

Yeah he's full on although he is a lab. We started with grain free not realising and when I tried one with grain he got horrific diarrhoea.

My Lab has always been fed Fish4Dogs, usually the salmon one. He is healthy, slim and never has smelly wind. It isn't cheap but they deliver. When changing any dog food you should do so in small increments, otherwise they are likely to get an upset stomach.

Check out allaboutdogfood you can put your budget in there. I feed a grain free food, but because it’s good quality not because it’s grain free. So I mix in a handful of Arden grange because I don’t want mine to lose the ability to digest grains.
As others have said on good quality foods you can often end up feeding less because it’s more nutritionally dense.

tizwozliz · 22/02/2022 10:41

If you email Millie's they are quite helpful I've found. Our 9 month old lab is eating the utility mix but they'll ask you age, weight, condition, activity levels and advise accordingly.

Stellaris22 · 22/02/2022 12:04

We feed ours Forthglade grain free and she really likes it. It does have to be grain free as she suffers from itchy ears and it helps a lot.

Pumpkin5piced · 22/02/2022 13:11

Watching with interest. My puppy is only 6 months and is on Eden kibble which we have no problems with. But, I’ve recently come across this idea that high protein content can equal hyperactivity and she seems to lack the ability to settle so I’m beginning to wonder if the food contributes.

MaChienEstUnDick · 22/02/2022 13:12

Millies is great, ours has been on Countryside mix from the very beginning.

averythinline · 22/02/2022 13:26

We also use millies wolfheart...for a springer...u can call them and ask to recommend to start with.that's what we did they are really helpful.... we've tried a few flavours and dogs liked them all! Currently on Riverside

SmolCat · 22/02/2022 13:53

Another recommendation for www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk

I raw feed and mine is really happy on it.

bingohandjob · 22/02/2022 14:43

Our one year old lab very happy on Guru. You can order a trial pack. Good digestion, good regular firm poos easy to pick up, he's a very happy, content dog. More expensive but he has less of it than other brands that seem to have a lot of bulking ingredients. He's got a beautiful shiny coat and other than when he has the odd treat, very little smelly wind!

Hugasauras · 22/02/2022 15:09

We use Forthglade too. DDog has a sensitive tum but does great on it.

Mine have Pooch and mutt they have deals on Amazon sometimes or via their website

ladyautumnal · 22/02/2022 23:52

Are you only looking at dry foods? If not then Nurturing by Nature & Durham Animal Feeds are great, if you're willing to consider a raw food diet. They came recommended by my golden retriever's breeder & my dog does very well on it.

Suzi888 · 23/02/2022 02:19

Forth glade dog dinners for my Lab.

frenchiemummy92 · 23/02/2022 06:35

Mine are on canagans.

food*

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 24/02/2022 23:27

We mix Canagan wet with Forthglade kibble. Once a week we give her home-cooked: usually chicken with a few veggies (carrots, sweet potato).

Nonbio46 · 25/02/2022 13:12

I put my 10 year old mini schnauzer onto Wolfworthy dog food and he loves it. It’s not cheap but is excellent quality.
