Harness recommendation for large puppy

Puppy is just about to launch on society (post second vaccinations) and I want to buy a harness; he is currently on a house line and soft collar.

He is a biggish pup but is going to get much bigger, therefore I don’t want to spend £££££ as I shall have to upgrade before too long. Otoh I want a nice comfy one. I went to pets at home for a look yesterday but their shelves were very bare.

Perfect Fit is a good harness, soft but strong. The three bits come separately which means you can buy individual pieces to upsize.

I really don't like the no-pull style harnesses especially Julius type, they restrict the natural movement of the dogs limbs & can cause pain & chafing.
Look for a good Y-shaped harness which allows free movement - perfect fit are great.

Thanks - what lead goes with a harness? Things have changed since my last dog who had an ordinary collar and lead. Do I need a double lead? [ confused]

We got a perfect fit so we could upgrade sections as she grew. Also like the fact they're washable and have a front and back ring.

Surelyitscoffeetime · 20/02/2022 11:07

What breed?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 20/02/2022 11:08

I also like the cosy dogs harnesses

Round here everyone uses the ruffwear harnesses. They are highly recommended from out local independent pet shops. Nice and padded. I use a halti training lead. You can adjust the lengths and even clip 2 together for a longer range

liveforsummer · 20/02/2022 11:20

Sorry forgot link. Obviously some of these are specialist harnesses people tend to just have the more basic of the range

The other thing to mention about the perfect fit is it clips round the neck, you don't have to put it over the head which some dogs dislike

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 20/02/2022 14:03

Perfect Fit, as then you can just replace pieces as necessary.

You can use whatever lead you like :)

Stellaris22 · 20/02/2022 14:19

We love Perfect Fit and have a dual clip Halti lead with it.

alsopeggy · 20/02/2022 14:23

Our puppy has Perfect Fit too, also with Halti training lead. Very comfy and just replace each bit as you need.

CatsForLife · 20/02/2022 15:53

Perfect Fit. Their customer service is excellent.

Krazykitty · 20/02/2022 16:17

Another one here just bought a Perfect Fit harness after lots of research. It’s soft and doesn’t restrict any movement. Would definitely recommend for any size dog.

DottyHarmer · 20/02/2022 16:27

Well, I’ll definitely investigate Perfect Fit!

Tip - get the wider version. I didn’t and have a large breed which pulls. I eventually had to upgrade after resizing in the narrow one. I have more pieces of a Perfect Fit harness than their warehouse!

Ilikewinter · 20/02/2022 18:13

Another one with a perfect fit harness, also with a double ended clip lead.

Helenluvsrob · 20/02/2022 18:20

Perfect fit.

Once my pup had outgrown a full harness, i.e. all 3 sections I sold them on.

sewinginmyfreetime · 21/02/2022 05:40

We really liked Perfect Fit when our dog was younger, but as he grew his shape was so weird (he is a very tall, long, bony lurcher) that Perfect Fit wasn’t perfect any more and rubbed badly in his bald armpits (the design puts the strap very close into the armpit, fine if you have a fluffy, podgy or normally shaped dog), and we tried all combinations of pieces but couldn’t get it to work for him. I then tried the Haqihana harness with the extra strap, but the back piece wasn’t long enough and it couldn’t be adjusted to be comfortable for him. In the end I made him one out of Biothane so it was exactly right, and this has been the only way he has gotten one that doesn’t chafe or rub in any way. I have to make his coats too as he is so lanky.
If your pup is an unusual shape or will be particularly lanky when he has finished growing I would consider made to measure when he has finished growing, and try perfect fit for the interim.

We got one of these when pup was 9mths and re-discovered pulling power as teen dog, it has been good as each bit adjusts. mekuti.co.uk/harness_shop.htm?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7PSXhKmQ9gIVgrbtCh1MwQoDEAAYAiAAEgIggPD_BwE
