Grapes

My brothers dog ate half a punnet of grapes. The vet has said it’s too late to make her sick so just wait it out and take her for a blood test in a couple of days.
We are absolutely terrified. Reading google then there’s no way she’s going to be ok. Can anyone give me any reassurance please?

There are dogs who don’t react to them in the slightest. The dogs that do get terribly ill though so it’s a question of all erring on the side of caution as you don’t know which your dog is.

DiscoBadgers · 14/02/2022 21:49

“ Grape poisoning affects different dogs differently. One grape can be deadly for some dogs, and other dogs can eat a dozen with no ill effects. The size, breed, age, or health of the dog are not factors in which dogs are affected or the seriousness of the symptoms.”

My dog ate some grapes a few weeks back, luckily we caught it in time for the vets to make her sick though, it's worrying. What I was told was that there is no predicting how dogs will react to grapes, some will be fine with lots, and some will be very ill from 1. It's not always bad so try not to worry too much, I know it's easy to say.

Jagley · 14/02/2022 21:53

Cross posted with @DiscoBadgers that was what I was tripping to say.

Hugasauras · 14/02/2022 21:53

Yes, just a waiting game sadly. Hopefully she will be one of the lucky dogs that isn't affected!

We've been to vet twice with DDog due to grapes and raisins (bloody carrot cake) but thankfully quick enough to give her the sickness jab.

My dog ate a grape, it was too late to make him sick but the vet did blood tests and put him on a fluid drip for 2/3 days and he is totally fine now, is this not an option?

ginginginny · 14/02/2022 22:04

The vet didn’t any options

My daughter is very very close to the dog, I actually can’t explain how awful I feel. It seems like we just have to wait and she if she’s ill, but by then it’ll be too late

My small dog ate a snack pack of raisins once and I didn't notice til the next day. She was absolutely fine but I realise we were lucky.

tearinghairout · 14/02/2022 22:15

Oh gosh. I'm really sorry. What an awful situation. Will be thinking of you xx

ginginginny · 14/02/2022 22:26

Thank you. There’s just nothing we can do, I keep googling but it’s not making me very hopeful

My dog has eaten dried fruit (in a Christmas cake) and lots of chocolate. He's been perfectly fine and I have worried myself sick over the years. Googling it told me he would probably die but as others have said, some dogs can eat these things and be OK, it's just a waiting game. His latest snack was the cable from a standard lamp, luckily he didn't eat the plug as well and thankfully the lamp wasn't plugged in. He's 13 on Wednesday and I really thought he'd grown out of this stuff by now. Fingers crossed your dog is OK.

Girlintheframe · 15/02/2022 07:47

Our lab didn't eat grapes but over the course of his life stole and ate a huge chocolate bar, my newly baked Christmas cake and a very dark chocolate cake.
Only time we made it to the vet in time was after the dark chocolate cake. Other times he was absolutely fine.
Hope all turns out ok! 🤞

TheSandgroper · 15/02/2022 11:26

Plenty of vineyard dogs are partial to a mid morning snack hanging at eye level in season.

ginginginny · 15/02/2022 19:12

She’s been absolutely fine today thank goodness, although I have read that she could get ill 48 hours later. She is having a blood test tomorrow morning and the results should be in tomorrow too so fingers crossed

Thanks for the update, keep us informed!

ginginginny · 16/02/2022 18:51

Blood test today and all is ok Smile The reading was a little bit higher than they’d like for her age but nothing alarming. So relieved!

My previous ddog was indestructible with contraband food items. Grapes, chocolate, mince pies. Some aren't so lucky. Glad your ddog is OK op.

AdoraBell · 16/02/2022 18:55

No advice, sorry but I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

AdoraBell · 16/02/2022 18:56

Oops, missed your update. Fab news 😃

gogohm · 16/02/2022 18:58

Some dogs react to grapes others do not, my childhood dog ate all kinds of foods now considered bad for dogs including mince pies. My current dog eats things with raisins in no issues. My vet said she still similar to humans with allergies

SmolCat · 16/02/2022 19:20

My vet said grapes are a bit like peanut allergies: some will react, some won’t.

(Whereas chocolate is poisonous to all dogs, it just depends on the dose they ingest relative to their size.)

ginginginny · 16/02/2022 22:58

Next time I won’t google! I was convinced it would be bad news, my daughter loves her so much I just panicked. Thank you for all your comments x

Recently at the vet after a grapes raid... she had the injection, vomited up the grapes then tried to eat them again out the sick tray the nurse was holding ... waiting on the following up blood test.
