Best way to wash a dog

puppydustbin · 13/02/2022 11:58

We have a spaniel puppy. He loves running in the woods and gets filthy. What's the best way of bribing him back in the house.

We don't have a downstairs bathroom so to give him a proper wash we have to pit him in our en suite shower. But often he just gets a run of his paws with a tower.

Our house is becoming filthy.

What's the best way of getting him clean. We have an outside cold tap but setting the hose on him feels mean.

One of these filled with lukewarm water?

muddaddy

I’m thinking about getting one for my lab as her coat soaks up mud

We carry our spaniel to shower and then just hose off her legs & paws with the hand held shower nozzle between proper baths. Have two doggy towels in rotation. We also purchased a portable rug doctor for £130 which helps with keeping sofa and rugs clean!

puppydustbin · 13/02/2022 12:06

That mud daddy looks brilliant!

Muddaddy, as above.

Also an Equafleece, to prevent needing to wash him in the first place!

Knowivedonewrong · 13/02/2022 17:55

Get the Karcher portable washer. Much better than the mud daddy.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 13/02/2022 18:08

I just cold hose them - if they're happy to get filthy in cold puddles so I figure that a cold hose can't be that torturous Grin

You can use an Equafleece to keep them dry on walks, or alternatively buy them a drying robe (doggy dressing down) and pop that on before letting him back in the house.

Microfiber towel for paws (removes so much more than a regular towel.
Vet bed to sit on in the car on the way home (if driving).
Equafleece to keep body clean (especially handy if dog likes rolling in fox shit!).

puppydustbin · 13/02/2022 19:04

Yes. He's quite happy in a manky pond.

Maybe outdoor hose and warm microfibre dressing gown is the way to go.

Equafleece all the way! I have a double coated dog who doesn't need a warm coat but the Equafleexe prevents the worst of the mud.
I have a wetroom (high reccommned building one on) but it's currently out of action so I have to lift my girl into the bath tub and it's a right pain!

Floralnomad · 14/02/2022 01:06

Equafleece for walks and then into a dog drying bag when he gets home , works for our dog .

Muddaddy working for our lab. Tether them somehow first. Turns out a lab can carry the muddaddy round the garden if she doesn’t want to be washed…

Maneandfeathers · 14/02/2022 08:30

We hose ours when they get home if they are muddy.
Quick blast with a blaster, takes about 5minz and also sends any remaining mud flying off and done!

Chasingsquirrels · 14/02/2022 08:34

Mine hates the shower, doesn't appear to like warm water, but is okay with a hoze down outside.

niceupthedanceagain · 14/02/2022 08:44

Cold hose in the garden!!

😂😂 I have a camping shower which has had similar treatment from my lab. Stubborn buggers.
Stormwhale · 14/02/2022 08:53

Honestly cold water is fine. Spaniels are happy to swim outdoors all year round, so a cold hose is not going to do them any harm. Hose down in the garden, scrub with a towel, good to go!

trumpisagit · 14/02/2022 09:01

Equafleeces are great for keeping them clean.
Also trim the fur on his legs so there is less for the mud to stick to.

Moneypennysfreedomfund · 14/02/2022 09:14

Springer owner here

  1. Carpet washer is a must … along with leather sofas etc…
  2. We got a child’s shell play pool/ sandpit and would just fill with warmish water …. He dislikes it but loves being towel dried so evens out!
  3. Groomer every 8 weeks ( she does his super hairy paws) and we keep him short but we are in a warmer climate … so may not work for what I remember of British winters
  4. If very chilly, we do his paws outside and then he gets a shower….

Good luck,… spaniel puppies are soo cute, even if they are mud/ sand/ mess magnets of the highest order!

Whitney168 · 14/02/2022 09:40

I find a wet microfibre towel (keep rinsing and wringing it out) more effective at getting a dog cleaner than just towel drying, but you could also go for a 'dry bag'.

JustJam4Tea · 14/02/2022 09:43

equafleece gave our dog mats.

We put a big plastic box outside with tepid water (more for our sake than hers) and dunk her in that. She hates the hose, but visiting golden retriever got used to one as a puppy and is fine with it.

We also got a dog dressing gown - ruff and tumble - and it's brilliant.

Ceara · 14/02/2022 11:05

I have a WCS. He will seek out and wallow in every bit of freezing cold mud, puddle and stream and is filthy after every walk. But if we use cold water to sluice the mud off, he tells us it's torture and we are horrible. I carry him to the bathroom and hide him down with warm water from the shower, life is easier that way! Then wrap him in a cheap ie unbranded microfibre drying coat.

Ceara · 14/02/2022 11:06

*hose

Ruibies · 14/02/2022 16:01

We also have the mud daddy and love it, no need to rinse out a bucket full of soap or mud, and our absolute princess of an ex-street dog throws less of a strop when the water is warm.

Only thing is that the bristles on the brush are quite stiff, probably fine if you have a long hair dog but ours (again, massive drama queen) finds it a bit rough on her short hair and bald tummy, so I usually just use my hands or a sponge.

We got it last winter and it's been a game changer for washing her quickly after walks.

ReallyRatherBlonde · 14/02/2022 16:21

We've bought a tap adapter to fit the hosepipe onto the mixer tap in the utility, we thread it outside and our collie +spaniel get a warm rinse and sometimes a shampoo on the patio before going back inside after a walk
