my ddog has never been in kennels, she is 9
we are planning a weekend away
what should we look for?
the one recommended is £28 per night, which i understand is expensive?
it is doggy day care but with over night an option
do all kennels require vaccination?
she has not had a booster for some years

I think most here require up to date vaccines. Will she cope in kennel as an older dog or would she be better suited to a home based sitting service?

GeneLovesJezebel · 07/02/2022 10:41

Do you not have anyone that can stay at yours with her instead ?

AuntTwacky · 07/02/2022 10:44

They will all require vaccinations why has she not had boosters?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/02/2022 10:45

yes the expensive one is perhaps a home stay

perhaps we could ask a neighbour to pop in? and walk her

can you explain a home base sitting service @GingerAndTheBiscuits

They absolutely should require vaccines, otherwise the risk of kennel cough or parvovirus is too high, any that don't ask for vaccines I would be wary of.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/02/2022 10:50

well we can remedy the vaccine issue

@MrsLargeEmbodied

can you explain a home base sitting service *@GingerAndTheBiscuits*
One where she is staying in someone’s home instead of an outside kennel? I just think for an older dog who is unused to kennels it could be quite stressful

If she hasn't had a booster she will have to have a complete new course which will take several weeks. She will also have to have kennel cough vaccine which is a spray up her nose.
My dogs have always stayed at kennels. They have always been totally fine. Ours have a webcam set up so you can view at anytime and they seem enjoy watching the daily activity in the kennels.

There are several options you can look at.

A traditional kennel set-up. She'll have her own kennel, and then exercise-wise, it will normally be a choice of free-reign of a secure field with other dogs, or on-lead walks off the premises. Some kennels charge extra for walks as it requires extra staff, but others include it in the overnight price. She'll need to be fully up-to-date on her vaccines to attend kennels, and prices can be anywhere from £10 to £30 per night depending on the area and what's included.

Then there's home-boarding, where she goes and stays in someone's home. Like kennels, home-boarders must be council licensed and insured and she'll need to be up-to-date on her vaccines to attend. Many home boarders take 3-4 dogs from different households at a time and will require a trial stay first to make sure everyone is happy. Home boarders tend to be more expensive than kennels as it's a more bespoke service.

Then, the final option is pet-sitting, where you pay someone (normally a dog walker) to come and spend the night in your home. Most sitters require the dog to be left for several hours during the day so they can continue with their normal work, though on weekends this may be different. There is no license available for pet-sitters though it's highly recommended that they're fully insured and qualified in canine first aid. You won't need to have your dog fully vaccinated for pet-sitting as they won't be mixing with other dogs. Rates can vary from £25-50 a night depending on the area and how many walks you require.

No worries @MrsLargeEmbodied, hopefully you find somewhere that suits her! You can always do a trial stay with different providers and see which one suits her best :)
