Puppy walks

Hi, I have seen all the advice that says that a puppy should be walked five mins per month or age twice a day but was wondering at what age that advice ceases? I can't seem to find anything online but presumably they get to an age when you don't have to count the minutes? When they're fully grown maybe?

Ah, this old chestnut :)

There's no scientific evidence to say you should only walk your dog 5 minutes per month of age. The theory came (I believe) from a post online about labradors.

Basically, build it up slowly and use your common sense. So don't drag a 4mo puppy out for hours, but build it up slowly and make sure they have plenty of breaks, time to rest and can stop if necessary. No running on hard surfaces, twisting and turning after balls etc.

How old is your puppy now?

Thank you! Pup is 15 weeks so have been doing 15 mins morning and evening but took him to a park today to practice recall and we were probably 25 mins by the time we'd got to the field, done the training and walked back to the car. He'd already had a morning walk too so I was reluctant to do the evening walk but also don't want to disrupt that routine we've got - settled for a five min sniff walk in the end but will feel bad if we've pushed him a bit much - he had a good sleep when he got back from the training but he seemed to love it!

I really wouldn't worry about doing 25 minutes at four months of age!

5 minutes per month of age is absolute cobblers. Be sensible and your pup will be fine.

Thanks both - feel better now Smile
