Was about to buy the puppy starter pack and read lots of reviews about them being unsafe. Are any of them ok?

Mine was ok with his until he got his proper teeth then he crunched it up in minutes. He doesn’t normally swallow things he chews but I can see how it could be dangerous as there were lots of little rough bits of plastic

DarlingDarwin · 04/02/2022 21:41

Same here 😂😂 once real teeth came in she just destroyed them 😂 the antlers that have been cut in half are brilliant

Helenluvsrob · 04/02/2022 23:08

Binned ours when I had to retrieve a chunk from round his back teeth. Agree may have been when he got his big teeth.

They're so dangerous and I'm surprised that it's seen as acceptable to give chunks of plastic to your dog to chew on, tbh.

Before I realised the danger, we bought some for our puppy - he chewed them up and we did find a chunk in his poo.

Never again. He gets nothing but 100% natural chews now.

It depends on the breed of dog obviously but be wary of natural treats too. Ours have been given antlers before and managed to crunch them up in no time. The problem being, they fractured into fairly large (and sharp!) pieces that they then swallowed. Fortunately they were both okay, but our male rottie was quite sick and off his food for a few days after. As others have said, definitely avoid Nyla bones

We have a small dog who is a grinder, rather than a chopper 😂 she’s never managed to break and antler in 7 years but she absolutely loves the marrow stuff in it. But you’re right, a stronger jaw could definitely break it

WhiteXmas21 · 05/02/2022 08:01

With Nylabone or any natural chew it’s important to get the size/ strength appropriate for the size and age of dog.
My fully grown lab bitch loves a nylabone, but it’s an extreme chewer version.
We’ve had softer ones which have to be ditched quickly as chunks break off. Stag antlers upset her stomach.
Natural chews like hairy rabbit ears , etc work well, but they don’t keep either of my dogs busy for long.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/02/2022 08:52

@WhiteXmas21 we did the same for our beagle and he still managed to rip a chunk off it HmmGrin

SpaceDetective · 05/02/2022 08:57

If you went by people's bad reviews on the internet pretty much all chews are off limits! They're either too soft and be eaten, too hard and they'll break teeth, too brittle and dog will eat sharp bits.

WhiteXmas21 · 05/02/2022 12:08

@fairylightsandwaxmelts All the beagles I know ( not many to be fair) are every bit as food driven and enthusiastic at chewing as my labs 😂

They definitely are Grin

Mine can jump onto the dining table (from standing) and if you leave food unattended up there for a second, it will end up in his stomach!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 05/02/2022 12:47

Not for my dog, they aren’t edible and he’s a power-chewer.
