Older dog becoming more anxious

We have a JRT x collie who will be 10 this year. She's always been a bit on the skittish side, but seems to be getting worse with age. The wind and some work on a neighbouring house seem to have made her really anxious today and last night she was barking randomly, I think because of the high winds.
Has anyone experienced a worsening of anxiety with an ageing dog?
In every other respect she seems fine - really keen to go on walks, very energetic, a bit grumpier with her 4 yo dog brother (!) and other younger dogs, but again, she's always had the slight collie aloofness...
I'm worried that our nervy Rommie rescue with pick up on her anxiety and we'll have two bundles of nerves!!!

Canine cognitive decline maybe?

I’ve a collie, he’s become wary of the dark. Have to drag out my mums house when I pick him up after work now. Also started staring at open doors instead of pushing them open like he used to.

I'd take her for a vet check if she hasn't had one recently. She could be in pain or have deteriorating vision or cognition.

Does she have a safe space in the house?

Sounds like doggy dementia.

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 01/02/2022 14:41

Yes that's what I was worried about. I'll get her checked out by the vet to see what they think.
She has also starting to stare at me which is a bit disconcerting. Not that often, but it's a bit odd.
I'm going to start to keep a diary of her habits - we used to just think it's her being her, but it's definitely getting worse recently.

Try ddoggy music on YouTube..
Lots of calming /for anxiety stuff on there.

You could also film her behaviour (capture it when it happens rather than try and trigger it) and show it to the vet.

Yes I regularly play the solfeggio frequency music as that definitely seems to calm them down. I think this has been largely triggered by the noise coming from next door, but she has suddenly started to get scared by things that have previously not scared her like crinkling plastic (she doesn't like the spot on oil that we have to use for her).
She also seems to have lost some weight but I put that down to a change to Senior Food - we've reverted back to AATU food as she's definitely not lost her agility and is anything but inactive.

I've just done the dementia screening tool on Vets4Pets site. She scored slightly cognitive impairment. I've made an appointment anyway just to rule anything else out.

Unfortunately noise phobias in dogs do get worse as they get older (unless their hearing gets worse). The noise phobias can often spread to other new noises too.

So a dog that once tolerated fireworks will start to show fear as they get older and then this can spread to cars that back fire or noisey lorries etc.

Behavioural plans can help after a vet check.

Thanks Polly. She has definitely got worse with firework noise phobia and is now medicated before bonfire night, NYE etc.,
One thing I've also noticed is that walking on pavements now she crouches when cars go past which she never used to do, so I would say that it's definitely a noise phobia thing.

Try an Adaptil collar on her - for my angst ridden dog it was a complete game changer.

Thanks will take a look
