How do you know when the time is right

Hi everyone I'm in need of advice because I really don't know what to do. I will be contacting a vet this week but just wanted some advice in the meantime. Thankfully weve never needed the vet other that injections as hes always been so healthy. We have a boy 12 years old who over the months has started to slow down quite a bit. These last few weeks he's lost a bit of weight even though he's still eating and we think he may have dementia as he forgets when he's been out, judges the step before going out (tiny step) won't go through the door unless it's wide open and constantly licking water outside. These past 2 weeks he's started to whine alot in the daytime to go out and once he's been out and back in he'll whine again. He's started to mess in the kitchen and now his crate too. We've been setting alarms to let him out through the night but the past 2 nights he's woke us up every hour on the dot to go out and come back in and wet himself again. He's started to scratch at his skin almost like a habit rather than an itch if that makes sense. He's also growled at me a few times and now my dd and youngest dog. I've got a safety gate up and he's not allowed with her alone but I'm too scared to let him anywhere near her at all incase he nips her. Sometimes he has a spring in his step for a few moments then back to lying down or whinning. I always thought I'd know when it was time and assumed he'd have to be really ill before the vet would put a dog to asleep not just old age but he's not himself anymore and I'm so tired now I feel like i can't function. I can't sleep because I know he'll wake me up at anytime. This is the most tough choice ever and never had to go through it before. What do I say to the vets?

I would just tell the vet what you have written down here. Mine would be if my dogs quality of life had gone then it would probably be time. I am dreading the day when it's her time, she's 9 so it could be years yet but I have seen some here age passing away.

About this stage. Mine was the same age and had a pain-management plan, but she seemed to get confused and cried every time I left the room. She was struggling with the stairs so I booked the appointment and spent the last few nights sleeping on the couch so I’d be close to her.

He could have a urine infection If he’s weeing a lot.
I’d go ASAP for a once over and a chat.
If it is the end for him, then it’s better to put him out of any pain and confusion.

Thanks for your replies. He's not necessarily weeing alot, he whines and I let him out and sometimes he does nothing then will come in and wee even if he's been outside a while whilst going him chance to wee, or he'll not wee outside come in and whine then I'll let him out again and that's when he'll wee. It is almost like he's forgotten he's been out of that makes sense. I don't think he likes me leaving the room either. I'm ringing the vet tomorrow and see if I can get an appointment. It's just so hard. I gave him a bath today and normally he runs off but he just stood there glaring at me not bothered at all. He doesn't seem to be interested In anything outside other than licking the floor. Such a hard decision but hopefully the vet can help me and him.
