Anyone cuts their dogs nails?

drinkingwineoutofamug · 29/01/2022 10:34

Dog has rather long nails on her front paws. But they are black nails. I can't see the quick.
She is absolutely petrified of the vets, to the point they have to treat/examine her outside. On the pavement.
Any tips. She's scared of the hair dryer or anything that makes a buzzing/whizzing noise so one of those electric nail filing tools is out of the question.
We do long pavement walks , but she prefers long runs through fields and digs a lot .
She's taping when she walks and will soon be sitting her on a perch. Any tips ?

Just cut very minimally from the front - and do this every 3-4 days until the nails are short enough. Then you can start doing it once every 1-2 weeks to keep them short.

This was the advice I was given :)

drinkingwineoutofamug · 29/01/2022 10:45

Thanks, we'll get some nail cutters and see if she lets me near her.
Think a towel , and husband will be needed. And treats , lots of treats

Try shining a torch through the nail and see if you can see the quick then.

Binglebong · 29/01/2022 10:59

How big is she? I've seen a few things on face book whenever people get a towel, cut out out holes for legs and hang it up. The towell wrapped round is supposed to act like a thunder jacket to comfort them.

FunkyPhantom · 29/01/2022 11:03

Get an old shower cap/rain hat and smear some peanut butter/marmite ( or whatever your furry friend likes ) on the front.......you can try and do the Nas while the dog is distracted 👍

FunkyPhantom · 29/01/2022 11:03

Nas 😆😆
Nails of course 👍

She's about the size of a whippet with the strength of an ox!

D dog hates having it done so will admit we threw some money at the problem and he now gets it done at doggy day care (where he tolerates it by gives the very offended looks Grin )

drinkingwineoutofamug · 29/01/2022 11:11

The offending nails. Think they would look pretty in red 😂

Ooh I'd love to get my hands on those 😆

Could you use a manual nail file? Just do a little every day.

SmolCat · 29/01/2022 12:05

I spent aggggeeesss training mine to tolerate the clipper so it is possible if you wanted to do it yourself.
I started really very basically;
First I touched the clipper to his foot and gave him a treat. I did this a couple of times a day for as many days as it took for him not to pull his feet away.
Then I moved on to holding it to his nail (not clipping) and giving a treat. Again, I did this for as long as it took for him not to pull away.
Then I clipped the air next to his nail, and the next step was to clip a nail but only a tiny bit at the very end.
Finally you can properly clip a nail.

At first it’s best just to do one or two nails a day.

I recommend lots of treats and lots of patience! Work at a pace your dog feels comfortable with and don’t push it or you’ll be back to square one.

(Or give in and send them to a groomer!)

There is a really good, read-only, Facebook group called Nail Maintenance for Dogs that might help. Lots of advice and other people’s experiences with black nails, sensitive dogs etc.

My boy absolute hated the nail clippers and also hates the hairdryer and ‘whizzy/whiny’ noises, but I was able to get him used to a particularly quiet rechargeable rotating file that cost me less than £20. (Kikopup has a video about how to do this on YouTube if you need help.) He has very thick black nails too. He just goes to sleep while I grind them now and his nails are always super short, which is important, because he has arthritis and long nails affect gait.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 29/01/2022 14:06

Thanks will give a try . She's only been more petrified of the vets since I can't go in with her.
She had an operation on her leg last may and they had to do the wound review in the street as I couldn't get her into the car park! She kept jumping the wall back onto the pavement.

This is the one I have.

I didn’t touch him with it for a few weeks, just desensitised him to the sound and rewarded for ignoring, then gradually decreased how far it was away from him. Once he was comfortable with that I barely touched it to one nail and worked up from there. He barely looks up now - until I finish, when he expects a treat for each paw!

Polkadotties · 29/01/2022 15:43

Where I live there is a fully qualified vet nurse who does claw clipping and other services in your home. Could you find someone like that

Postdatedpandemic · 29/01/2022 15:54

Dog omelette is an essential part of nail clipping.

If there's whippet in there ie a lurcher remember sighthounds do tend to have long claws anyway. We had a whippet terrier cross years ago with dark nails - I found if I just nipped off the very tip it encouraged the overgrown bit to wear down with normal exercise. When we first got her a vet trimmed her nails and went straight through the quick. Poor thing was dripping blood on the way home.
Our current greyhoundy lurcher has never had his claws clipped. We always ask the vet to check and they always say they're fine even though they look long to me.

She's gorgeous BTW, just the sort of dog we love in this house!

She's a Belgian Mali / whippet with a sprinkling of grey hound and staffie , according to dna She loves to dig. I'm going to phone the vets on Monday and ask if they know anyone who will come to my home.

Definitely a little at a time, desensitising over many days with threats as PPs have laid out, and then keep it up regularly just little and often. The quick extends into the available nail, so you can’t cut right back immediately anyway if overgrown, and of course with black nails you need to be cautious. So desensitise, cut cautiously little and often, and persevere.
