Dog is shaking - what could it be?! Worried

I’ve called the out-of-hours vet and they suggested to come in in the morning as he’s still eating and drinking normally; and then there’s no emergency surcharge fee. I will do that but, in the meantime, I adore that dog and am worried!

A few days ago, I noticed he was shivering a bit and thought it odd - but put it down the cold etc.

But this evening the shaking is very pronounced. There’s no missing it. And, even though he’s eating and drinking as normal, he won’t leave me alone, and groaned when I wasn’t paying him attention at one point.

What could it be?! I wonder if it could be an infection? Anyone else’s dog had a sort of mystery shaking?

He’s 3, so quite young, and normally very healthy.

How long ago did you ring the vet? If he's got worse since then, it would be best to ring them back and ask their advice.

Santahasjoinedww · 28/01/2022 19:37

Ddog gets a dicky tummy with shivers and a noisey tummy and then explodes!
Can you take your ddog outside?? Fast.

Rollypolly12345 · 28/01/2022 19:39

I called them about 20 mins ago! He’s now eating a teeth cleaning stick (he loves them) on the sofa. He seems ok - needy and shaky, but not terrifying me… yet!

Good idea about taking him out! I’ll let him out into the garden and follow him with a torch and see if that’s it!

Another echoing to let him outside - my mutt did this last week and I was quite terrified, but brought him outside, did his business (clearly stomach upset) and was fine.

longtompot · 28/01/2022 19:54

Mine shakes when she is in pain or has eaten something which has upset her stomach.

Redannie118 · 28/01/2022 19:58

Mine gets the odd anal abcess and being clingy and shaky is always the first sign. Have you had a look in all obvious places ie bum, gums, ears etc?

Lovemusic33 · 28/01/2022 20:01

What breed is he?

Only asking because there are some breeds that tend to shake when they want attention or if they are anxious…or cold…or hungry…

My dog used to shake/shiver a lot.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 28/01/2022 20:28

Mine shakes before he throws up - normally because he's eaten something he shouldn't have Hmm

He also shakes when he wants the food we're eating or when he's cold.

Rollypolly12345 · 28/01/2022 20:46

He’s a cocker spaniel- I think I might have solved it? I was sort of stroking all around his head and body to see if anything hurt; and he yelped when I ruffled an ear! It also felt quite warm Sad

Would he shake with pain if he had an ear infection?

Poor thing. He’s so clingy this evening!

Yes,quite possibly.A dog in pain will shiver.have you got any metacam painrelief med you could give him until you see the vet tomorrow?

gogohm · 28/01/2022 22:08

Look online, if you don't have dog meds, certain human ones are safe and you might be able to buy at a late night pharmacy (every area has one open until 11)

gogohm · 28/01/2022 22:09

(Or you bet might be able to suggest an out of hours get your can pick some up from)

Please don’t, unless advised by the vet. You can certainly poison a dog with paracetamol or other medicines so don’t risk it.

Please, please don't do this!

The dog will be fine to wait until morning to see the vet and get some proper, species appropriate medication.

Undecicive · 28/01/2022 22:27

My dog was prescribed paracetamol by the vet at £6.50 per pack or similar.

Yes but I bet the vet also calculated how much and how often to avoid damaging your dog’s liver.
Motorina · 29/01/2022 06:25

Shaking and clingy sounds like pain to me. I think you’re right in identifying the painful ear as the cause.

Totalwasteofpaper · 29/01/2022 06:36

Our springer was like this and itvturned out she had a mite infection in her ear Sad
It looked horrific and I felt insanely guilty and neglectful (assumed it had been there weeks).
The vet said it was v early stages and had seen much worse Shock and we got it treated.

Cockers gave similar "damp warm ears" so might be incubating something.

Our current DDog shakes fairly violently when even a tiny bit cold, excited, nervous, wants attention, wants what you are eating - such a diva Grin

sandgrown · 29/01/2022 06:44

My Shih Tzu shakes so hard his teeth chatter if he gets anxious . I do think he has learnt to do it for attention though !

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 29/01/2022 09:02

But it will be specially calculated to be the right dose for your animal.

Human paracetamol comes in 200 or 250mg tablets for the most part which is far far too strong for a domestic pet.

Undecicive · 07/02/2022 13:28

My dog was 70kgs. Human dose did it.

Caplin · 07/02/2022 15:57

My vet told me to give my dog (Labrador size) half a paracetamol when he bashed his leg. But I wouldn't do it without a vet telling me it was ok.

Florida2020 · 12/09/2023 18:45

My vet said 1/4 of a paracetamol every 4 hours is very safe and I have used this on my dog, makes a difference 😁

Newlittlerescue · 12/09/2023 23:08

My dog shook if he had a temperature (which is likely if he has an infection).
