Best big dog with kids?

What big/giant dog breed would you recommend with small children? Nothing too excitable/energetic but with a bit of intelligence and willingness to train in obedience.

Not giant but Rottweilers are amazing! Full of love and obedience. They live to please you! You would need a trainer or experienced hand.

Leonberger · 25/01/2022 20:58

Our leonberger are amazing with children. I have young children myself and they seem to know they must be careful. I’ve never seen a dog so gentle despite the obvious size difference. Ours are registered therapy dogs and love nothing more than being cuddled and fussed.

They are also incredibly intelligent and capable of obedience (I’ve competed at lower levels) however motivation is not their strong point so it can be hit and miss Grin

Rotties are amazing, german shepherds as long as trained and not bored. I adore Newfoundlands, gorgeous breed and the 3 who live near me are just lovely and sweet and gentle giants, they do tend to think they are lapdogs according to their owners!

Another vote for Rotties

Lou573 · 25/01/2022 21:04

Flat coated retriever!

SexPeopleLynn · 25/01/2022 21:14

Labradors!! My lab is adorable with my toddler

tabulahrasa · 25/01/2022 21:19

Um... rotties are great dogs, but they can be both excitable and energetic.

Also, they have literally no idea how big they actually are and if they’ve got brakes then they’re faulty - they frequently come to a stop by running into you or fences or whatever.

Mine broke my DP’s tooth with his head once.

So while they’re hugely trainable, you do need fairly robust children.

WhiteXmas21 · 25/01/2022 21:24

Golden retrievers and labs all the way. Very stable, bomb proof creatures. Their faces naturally smile.

emsmar · 25/01/2022 21:30

Another vote for a rottie! They need to be very well trained though. Big sooky adorable babies. Lovely dogs.

emsmar · 25/01/2022 21:33

Have a look at 'Nala the needle rottie' on Instagram if you get a chance! 😩

emsmar · 25/01/2022 21:33

Needy

Xiomara22 · 25/01/2022 21:33

Dogue de Bordeaux, we’ve got a 2 yo , had since a puppy and he’s such a chilled out dog. Loves our son to bits

Wolfiefan · 25/01/2022 21:35

Puppies are bitey and hard work. I waited until my youngest was 6 before getting a large breed! How young are the kids?
How much grooming and walking and training could you do?

Dogdayafternoonz · 25/01/2022 21:36

I wouldn't get a rottweiler with kids on the house. Even if you didn't work about your own kids other people won't let their kids go round to play with your kids if you have a rottweiler.

I'd get a lab or a golden retriever or a lurcher.

Nonsense.

Bernese Mountain Dog.Calm and gentle dogs.

Strokethefurrywall · 25/01/2022 21:54

Leonberger, Newfoundland or Bernese. All are known for their wonderful sweet temperaments.

winter12345 · 25/01/2022 21:59

I have golden retrievers, they are very excitable and not great for small children.

Newfies and leonbergers are lovely and calmer than goldens.

Rewritethestars1 · 25/01/2022 22:09

The thing with big dogs is that they easily and regularly knock over little children by accident. They get big quickly so are big giant excited puppies who as much as you train are still puppies... just huge.

My goldie is calmer than most dogs his age. Hes very gentle and practically bomb proof. Literally the world's softest dog. From a therapy litter. But still hes goofy and a big fluffy presence in our home. My toddler is very robust luckily.

I don't think any dog is totally calm till about 3. Its just easier to manage with smaller dogs.

SnotRags · 25/01/2022 22:10

Not keen on the idea of a Rottweiler 😳 I’m a softie with dogs, don’t want anything strong willed although I realise that all dogs are individuals.

Quite fancied the idea of a Newfoundland but was put off by owners who said their dogs just lie down in the middle of the road and refuse to move etc!

Leonberger is sounding like a good choice, similar size and appearance to a Newfie but with a bit more energy?

Golden retriever, a properly bred show type one.
My sister has two and she’s the least suitable person to own a dog that I can think of (chaotic, highly strung, badly fenced garden, has house rabbits and cats) and these dogs are wonderful.
Great with any age kids, despite her not having any. A 7 year old girl shows the older one in young handler classes.
I’ve got Vizslas, the goldens make mine look like they’re on crack, and mine are well trained and sociable.
