Anyone know of any greyhound rescue centres that cat test greyhounds?

We have recently lost our eight year old female grey to cancer, and have a greyhound shaped hole in our household. We already have a five year old male greyhound and two cats. We had the cats before the dogs and integrated them slowly and they all got on fine, even sleeping together on beds and sofas. Both greys were ex racers and the boy has a really strong prey drive for squirrels and rabbits.

I have been looking through greyhound rescue sites but it seems like all greys are automatically labelled as not cat safe. But none of the centres say whether they have actually tested this or if it's just assumed. So if anyone knows of any centres who do some level of cat assessment to see if they are 'cat trainable', could you point me in that direction? We are based in the north west but would happily travel. We've got dogs straight from the trainers in the past who seem much more willing to take risks with who takes their dogs, but I'd prefer to use a rescue if possible if we can work around the cat issue.

Thanks!

How about a rescue that fosters dogs? ELGR?

OneOfTheGrundys · 23/01/2022 15:10

Kent Greyhound Rescue are excellent. Lots of dogs in foster and they have a few cat friendlies at the moment I think? Or they did until recently.

OneOfTheGrundys · 23/01/2022 15:12

Yup just checked, several ‘cat workable’ lovelies! By workable they mean trainable with your pet cats… not cats in general iykwim.

That's exactly what I was looking for, thank you! I see they are mostly described as laid back and lazy, which describes our male also. Our girl was bossy and demanding, and a proper task master. We need one of those! We're lost without her rigorous commitment to schedule.

So many beautiful hounds on there.

They are a really good rescue. Very rigorous but also very sensible and pragmatic and they really know their dogs. We’ve had 2 from there and they knew them 100%, foibles and all.
It’s a way from you I know but they might know of others closer to you with the same approach? Lurcher SOS have lots of fostered dogs too.
Good luck! Very exciting.

We have no problem travelling so Kent isn't an issue. I have family who live down that way so we can just turn it into a trip. I'd rather get a hound from a good rescue, especially having read some of their blogs. Our girl was young and timid when we got her and I wish we'd had their advice as we made lots of mistakes (although also got lots right, reading into it). She was a difficult first hound to have, although the bond we formed through it was immeasurable and she will always be in my heart. Having lost her aged 8 I'm willing to give another young one a go as the thought of going through the pain of loss again any time soon is too much to bear.

She sounds so lucky to have found you. Our first grey was very cantankerous but a loveable character. Gone but never forgotten!
There are some lovely dogs in there at the moment and they will take time to match you. During Covid restrictions they were only rehoming locally but I think they’ve gone back to usual service now.

Greygirl3 · 23/01/2022 19:20

Have you looked at Greyhound gap who are an excellent rescue based in Staffordshire?

79andnotout · 23/01/2022 20:37

I've just had a look now. Nothing cat trainable at the moment but I will keep an eye out, thanks.

Even if there is nothing on the website I would contact some rescues to say you’re looking. I would guess there are dogs that are rehomed before getting online.

Daybreaks in Birmingham. You could also try Bark Inn in Walsall - I know they’ve homed lots of greys to households with a cat.

We lost our greyhound last year and miss her a lot.
With two small children we’re not getting another one anytime soon but I love to look!

We got our cat-tested greyhound from Durham Greyhound Rescue so not too far to travel. I'm sorry for your loss. We lost our last greyhound at 7 and it does somewhat break your heart Flowers

HarrietSchulenberg · 23/01/2022 20:51

You could look for a failed racer rather than a retired dog. We had a completely failed racer - she had virtually no prey drive and could have lived happily with a cat, had the cat not had other ideas. The only time I saw her interested in chasing something was when she spotted a fast moving hare 2 fields away - ears went up and she gave it a good stare, then turned back to snuffling in the cow pat I'd been trying to get her out of.

mummabubs · 23/01/2022 20:52

Maybe try Greyhound Rescue Wales? Our boy from there is not cat friendly, but I know of several others from there who are now living with cats so we're presumably tested? Sorry for your loss by the way x

reddevilunited · 23/01/2022 20:53

What part of the country are you in?

79andnotout · 23/01/2022 20:57

Thanks for all the suggestions. We're in greater manchester.
