We met a lovely little 12 month old Patterdale today. Instant best friends with DD and he was a friendly, funny little dog. We are planning on getting a dog and a Patterdale would seem to fit the bill. Anything I need to be aware of?

@Molecule You've described my border there, lovable in the house but once outdoors he turns into a complete arsehole. He's my first experience of terriers and Jesus, he lives his life by his rules and bollocks to anyone else ie me!

My 14 year old Patterdale/ border cross looking pissed I've put her in a coat 🤣

We have Patterdales in our extended family. The Purebred is over 10 and still disappears for hours on every walk (and finds own way home). The Patterdale cross did the same but they never came home one day.

The purebred is more like a cat with their affection, it's always on their terms.

If you want an affectionate bred that's easy to look after and excellent with kids, perhaps consider a sight hound (greyhound, whippet, lurcher) from a rescue centre.

Beautiful dogs that could easily run 20 miles plus a day, working dogs with a very high prey drive.

Here’s mine! She is awful but we love her

Does anyone have any idea about this - our Pattedale (pic above) was a rescue and we don’t have any info about her previous life - but she has a tattoo on her inner ear - is this something that is common and what does it mean? We bumped into another rescue patterdale once and he had the same thing.
Anyway I guess it doesn’t really matter because she’s happy and safe now but sometimes wonder

We have a 7.5yr old patterdale x springer (she looks like a small black lab with a white chest, and a beard!), and she's absolutely amazing.

She was easy to train, but both her parents were working dogs so hoping this paid off. She's loving and affectionate, and just adores the dc's (10 & 15).

The downsides.... she's a bit of a nutter! She has endless energy when it suits her, so she'll lie about literally all day given the chance but will also walk for hours. She's ball obsessed!! She's only allowed them when we're going on a specific "ball walk", otherwise she's a complete nuisance them. Which brings me to the other thing.... she's determined and doesn't give up. Add in with the Springer intelligence and she can be relentless if she's lost a ball or is looking for your attention right at that very second! But despite this alleged intelligence, she can be stupendously stupid....

Her AKA is Twat Dog Wink.

But I wouldn't change her for the world, and she literally been the best dog.

A working patterdale or similar terrier wouldn't equal easy to train. Unlike spaniels, herding breeds etc they don't work in partnership with humans but pretty much independently doing their own thing. They traditionally docked their tails for when they took themselves down holds and needed removed by hand 😆.

The goofy intelligence and ball obsessing are all spaniel things (the desire to retrieve). The terrier will want their ball just so no one else can have it 😆. What you seem have there is a springer in a patterdale shaped body which is probably a good thing for you 😁

Wow, she looks exactly like our old girl! Same cheeky wee face and wee white specs!! Ours was a rescue too, she was worked but didnt have a tattoo. I have heard some estates or kennels tattoo their dogs ears like racing greyhounds.
liveforsummer · 26/01/2022 21:52

Yes they'll tattoo the working dogs so other farmers etc know who's they are when they are found down their badger sets instead of those on the land of their owners

That makes sense thank you. Poor little thing she went through a tough time in her past life I think. She’s currently snoring with her snout in my armpit dreaming of distant badgers

Floralnomad · 27/01/2022 00:59

@liveforsummer , my patterdale is ball obsessed and it’s not in a it’s mine I want it type way , it’s in a heres a ball keep throwing it for me type way . He loves his toys and despite being 11 he plays for hours a day indoors . We don’t allow hard balls indoors as he’s too annoying with them but he loves playing with his plush toys .

Busymommabearkkh · 09/06/2024 10:17

We have a pocket bully who's 3 and a patterdale terrier who's nearly 1 and our patterdale is my 5 year old sons bestest friend
He puts up with our son doing alsorts and goes back for more haha
He constantly plays with him greets him all the time it's beautiful to watch he plays for hours with him.

He barks at everything passing . He really wants to catch a cat which is sometimes challenging and he's an escape artist haha so you have to make sure every where is secure. They need walking every single day otherwise become a nuisance at home. Overall he is such a positive touch to our family we love him lots

decionsdecisions62 · 09/06/2024 18:53

We've had our girl now for nearly 17 years. She is amazing. She's been there throughout my daughter's childhood and I to adulthood. She will be irreplaceable.

kitkatkat · 10/06/2024 13:06

For anyone looking for a slightly chill (ish) terrier, can I recommend an Australian terrier? We have one as our first family dog in a suburban semi - she has definitely got the terrier, ahem, spirit but she plays nicely with other dogs, only barks at selected joggers and is keen on visitors. She has eaten a little bit of sofa and sometimes will wake in the night to bark at foxes but she is excellent fun and definitely enjoys life as a pet. Here she is digging up some lavender
