Sore looking paw, what should we do, pics

Greyhound has a sore looking paw, but he is walking fine and it doesn't seem to be hurting him. He was at the vet this week for a check up and I don't think he had it then, I think this has just happened in the last 24 hours. He is licking it a lot. Do we need to get it seen to, or anything we can buy to soothe it (which he will probably lick off)

Other paw for comparison

Ours gets similar every winter. Wash it clean, dry the. Throuoghly after every walk and we find talc powder helps keep them dry. Ours doesn't lick it though.

Thanks @Keladrythesaviour I will give it a wash and keep an eye on it

My first thought was to leave him alone, apart from making sure we clean him off when he comes inside, but I end up second guessing stuff like this. We are newish owners and don't want to inadvertently neglect something!

Although actually looking at the pictures his pad looks much worse than ours gets so I would have a vet visit. You might need to put a boot on it to stop the pad getting mucky whilst it heels.

Keladrythesaviour · 22/01/2022 10:18

Sorry I should think before hitting send. You can get oils to rub into the pads which help soften then and prevent cracking. Also make sure you're washing his feet after every walk in case it's salt from the roads causing the problem.

Baystard · 22/01/2022 10:21

It looks really sore OP, as if he's nibbled some of the skin on the bottom of the pad off?

I think it's a vet trip. We had one who did this and IIRC there was cream from vet and a ?Mikki Boot to stop the licking.

AwkwardPaws27 · 22/01/2022 10:21

I'd probably take mine to the vet as I don't like how red and inflamed it looks in the first picture. Is it hot to touch?

Some dogs are pretty stoic with pain (mine is - I know others that are wimps though Grin) so it can be hard to tell how much discomfort they are in. Licking is a sign it is bothering him in some way, although hard to know if that is pain or another sensation like itchiness.

AnnieJ1985 · 22/01/2022 10:22

Oh thanks, I will give vet a call to be on the safe side!

I would visit the vet for that, it looks very sore. Also look up dog boots on Amazon, one of my girls had a cut between her pads pre Christmas and the constant licking was making it much sorer so we popped the boot on for a few days. She looked like a space dog because it was silver but it sorted her paw out pretty quickly

MrsEricBana · 22/01/2022 10:26

Yes vet I think too as could get infected. Hope he's better soon.

PermanentlyDizzy · 22/01/2022 10:50

I would get the vet to look at it. We’ve had smaller abrasions on our Lurcher’s feet that we’ve successfully treated with Leucillin, but the wound in the first picture does look like it needs to be assessed. Might be worth getting some Leucillin in for the later stages of healing though. It’s an absolute godsend for any small wounds or abrasions.

We found, after trying a few different styles, that Trixie sock-style boots were the easiest to keep on skinny hound legs/feet and also the most accepted by them. I would shop around though, as iirc, we only paid about £15.00 for ours.]]

PermanentlyDizzy · 22/01/2022 11:00

Just realised I forgot to say, we clean/treat with Leucillin first, then cover with Vetericyn Hydrogel which creates a barrier that stops them being able to lick at the wound. Our vet recommended it.

Chuechebache · 22/01/2022 11:08

You need to see the vet.that paw looks very very sore!dogs are quite tough, but I am sure your dog is in pain with that paw.

BiteyShark · 22/01/2022 11:20

Ouch! glad you are going to see the vet as I was about to echo everyone else and say that's looks very sore and larger than I would manage without a vet check.

PermanentlyDizzy · 22/01/2022 11:29

Just had another thought. When mine had similar pad wounds as a youngster it was from ‘brakes failure’ when running the length of the garden full speed and skidding on the patio, taking the skin off his pad as he went. We eventually found that a few strategically placed planters seemed to remind him to slow up before he reached the patio, rather than failing to brake until he hit the slabs.

We were constantly at the vets due to his faulty brakes when he was a youngster - usually out of hours!

Floralnomad · 22/01/2022 11:34

Definitely needs a vets opinion and get him a boot to stop him licking it and making it worse , that looks really sore . Hope he feels better soon .

AnnieJ1985 · 24/01/2022 13:56

I forgot to update you. We sent pics to vet who was keen to see him so we brought him in. He doesn't have an infection yet, vet reckons he had a callous on the pad, which came off- this is the graze. We have to keep it clean and dry (as much as we can) and he gave us a solution to put on it, to heal it up. Doggo is back in vets in 2 weeks for a booster anyway, so he will check it again then.

It doesn't seem to be bothering him at all, but glad we had it looked at

Thanks for all your advice
