Good evening!

This is something I wonder about, with all the criticism of oodle / poo dogs and their problems, has anyone thought of breeding cockapoos and cavapoos responsibly?

I’ve absolutely no plans to, as I prefer other breeds but they are popular and obviously a market for them so would love to hear of good responsible breeding.

If I was a lover of their temperament/ looks etc, would think it a good idea but sadly I’m just not drawn to them.

Anyway, just a nice friendly chat as to whether you have done this. have thought about doing this, and what put you off, struggles had.

@Velvetorsilk

There’s no insistence. I’ve just expressed the view that I prefer the look of cockerpoos over poodles and I can tell the difference, and for some reason this won’t be accepted and poodles and cockerpoos look the same and any cockerpoos I do see must really be poodles! Grin
I don't think anyone is saying poodles and cockapoos look identical, just that if you put two cockapoos side by side, they can look completely different.

I just find it a bit weird when someone says "I prefer the look of a cockapoo" when they don't actually have a specific look, lol.

I don’t think anyone is saying the dogs you like are necessarily poodles, but they could be any other breed or cross.

Of course people have a preference on what they like the look of, no judgement here. :)

Unless you are an extremely experienced and knowledgeable owner and breeder of cocker spaniels x poodles, I find it hard to believe you can automatically correctly identify the breed of the dog by sight. If you really can, you should put your skills to good use!

Thanks all, it looks like there are some good breeders out there from responses but maybe the greyhound rescuers jump onto the poo threads and boycott it!!

I say this in slight jest, my family love to rescue ugly old greyhounds. Greyhounds are ok but I’ve known it a few in my family who have to be muzzled, can’t be let off leads and can’t be walked with my dog!

I love spaniels, setters and retrievers by the way!

My suggestion would be to ascertain the main genetic health issues in the breed or crossbreed, then when you speak to a dog breeder, you’ll be clued up and know what to ask.
Avoid gumtree and similar, maybe word of mouth?

Good luck :)

But also be aware which of genetic issues are recessive and only occur in one of the breeds. If a puppy only gets one copy of a recessive, and you don't plan to breed it, it's not an issue.

My guess is people hate 'fashion breeds' because they get bought for the wrong reason and in the wrong way, i.e. lack of research of temperament, lack of care/research of breeders, lack of checks on health testing etc... Which then leads to bigger problems and too many being abandoned.

Ultimately this is not a 'breed' / mix problem per se, cavapoos and cockapoos (and other mixes) can be amazing family pets.

The real problem is FASHION. Fashion is fickle. Fashion changes. Therefore 'fashion breeds' change. Years ago it was Dalmatians as an example (I wonder, do people judge having a Dalmatian as wrong in todays world?). Now people huff and puff about poodle mixes because in this decade, they fit the 'fashion' box. But that shouldn't mean cavapoos or cockerpoos are a bad choice of breed/mix. The breed has to fit the family/lifestyle and the right research and care needs to be taken in finding the right breeder. In the next 10 years the fashionable breed will change. Then it will be a different breed/mix that is being frowned upon.

When GoTs came out, Huskies became popular and surprise surprise... there was a surge in huskies in shelters (triple the normal amount)

Hmm, I don’t think they’re put in rescues proportionally highly, if anything a bit under represented because some people sell them on, but unless they’re bought by people who weren’t prepared for any real dog at all, they’re not a particularly hard breed, it’s a cross of fairly trainable breeds that all usually make pretty good pets for anyone doing a normal amount of training and exercise. Not like huskies where they’re going to require much more than that.

It’s more the whole ethics and welfare issues with the largescale production of them as they’ve become popular, which is an issue with any very popular breed too.

And for me personally also a bit of confusion about why people want them - because what they describe they want is a poodle, but they don’t want a poodle, so they get a poodle cross which could end up being very like a poodle anyway... and while it’s still hard to find a good poodle breeder (because it’s hard to find a good breeder of any breed) at least with a poodle breeder you’re looking for a needle in a haystack rather then looking for the hen’s teeth of a good doodle breeder.
