I’m thinking of his paws. Will they get ice burn on the cold surface?

no but id wash his paws when you get back in case of salt/grit

Cactuslockdown · 18/01/2022 07:21

No… he’ll be fine!

Happytodayhappytomorrow · 18/01/2022 07:21

Thank you Blush

I guess it depends on the coat. Mine has a thick long coat so he loves that type of weather

Branleuse · 18/01/2022 07:22

Is he brand new? Most people walk their dogs throughout winter. Put a coat/jumper on him if hes shorthaired

Grumpyosaurus · 18/01/2022 07:40

Most dogs are fine in the cold if they are dry and keeping moving. We used to have a very short-coated dog who loved a good roll on frosty grass or snow.

LBF2020 · 18/01/2022 08:55

My dogs like to walk in all weathers so that's what we do Grin If they were less keen on the cold I would stick an equafleece on or let them enjoy the comfort of a lay in Wink
When I got back from our walk this morning both dogs had frozen fur on their undercarriage and I couldn't untie my laces because they were frozen solid Shock

Postdatedpandemic · 18/01/2022 09:16

I usually take the equafleece with me on zero and below walks, just in case she leaps in the stream.

Today hairy pointer has opted for a lie in. I think that is down to her first experience with an electric fence yesterday.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 18/01/2022 09:21

We walk in all weathers unless it’s torrential rain or very hot out. DDog doesn’t seem to mind and won’t settle until she has her walks.

magicstar1 · 18/01/2022 09:23

Mine is a GSD who has a good thick coat, and she loves nothing more than to thrash around on icy grass. Just wash his paws when you get home in case of salt / grit on the pavements.

Sweetleftfood · 18/01/2022 11:42

I am from Sweden and have friends in Canada, some have little shoes for their dogs but then it's usually -20 or colder. Your one will be fine

MrsWinters · 18/01/2022 12:42

Depends entirely on the breed. But try mushers secret on the paws if your worried. If it’s snowy I make sure there plenty of the fur between the pads to stop snow clumping.

Happytodayhappytomorrow · 18/01/2022 16:18

sorry all, I must have been half asleep this morning and not thinking straight. I've no idea why I posted. I'm an fairly experienced dog owner Blush

And, don't laugh, but ddog is a utility breed with a fabulously warm coat Grin (although in my defence, it was his paws i was concerned about).

I think some of the skinny sighthounds - lurcher, greyhounds etc like a coat in this weather. But most dogs are fine. The heat is more of an issue in most cases....

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 18/01/2022 18:48

Nah, he'll be absolutely fine. Mine was out in -2 this morning - no coat, and he was just fine zooming around.

I only worry when it drops to around -5 but even then I would still walk him, just be aware of stopping too much.

devildeepbluesea · 18/01/2022 18:52

My little nutter got so hot on his walk the other day (little more than freezing out) that he ran straight into the garden into his paddling pool 😂

Granted he didn’t wallow for long…

MintyGreenDream · 18/01/2022 18:53

My chihuahua doesnt like pissing outside when its this cold never mind walking in it!

Chasingsquirrels · 18/01/2022 18:55

My idiot wanted to go swimming today, but settled for a paddle instead. Idiot dog!

Chasingsquirrels · 18/01/2022 18:57

DPs Great Dane won't go out in the rain, even to toilet (just holds it). Sticks his head half out of the door then comes back in.

Hoppinggreen · 18/01/2022 18:57

Our Goldie would love it

TheFoundation · 18/01/2022 19:00

No - lots of them love to play in snow. If you can put your hand on the ground without it damaging your puny human skin, a dogs thick paw skin will be ok.

Hot tarmac in summer is more risky.

MarshaBradyo · 18/01/2022 19:02

We did loads of dog walking in the snow last year it was fine for their paws

Throwntothewolves · 18/01/2022 19:06

You can get paw wax to rub on their feet which provides a protective barrier, bit like lip balm for the paws. It comes in a shoe polish style tin so easy to rub each paw across it

onedayoranother · 18/01/2022 19:20

If you live where they would heavily salt where you walk then wash the dogs paws after. But otherwise... it's a dog, they are pretty hardy.

BunnyRuddington · 19/01/2022 18:55

My short haired idiot absolutely will not wear a coat so I clean off her paws when we get home, give her a rub with a towel and throw a blanket over her. Mind you she did have a lie in this morning but it was 6 o'clock Grin
