how much is a consultation with your vet?

Am I really out of touch?

A consultation is £60 now. I appreciate location might play a part (I'm borders of North London and Hertfordshire).

Is this fairly standard I'm wondering.

£50 - Edinburgh. £50 bloody pounds to be told to feed him boiled chicken (which didn’t help btw) Shock

shedevill · 17/01/2022 22:25

40 Shropshire

Thanks for all your replies. I wonder if the difference is partly due to location and also partly due to small privately owned vets versus the big companies.
Where I am, there are no longer any private vets. The smallest set up is 4 surgeries including a hospital. The others are Medivet or Village vet etc (huge groups).
I had replied from those I contacted and they are all in the £55/£60 ball park.

Excuse me while I just shout upstairs…

Ours has definitely shot up in price over the last few years but they do have a lot of surgical and diagnostic facilities on site which has to be paid for through investment.

Andouillette · 18/01/2022 11:50

£28. £10 for a telephone consultation. Less for smaller animals, getting a hen PTS is £6 for instance, my vet would rather charge a minimal fee than have people attempting to do it themselves.

Ah but remember 5 years at vet school with no opportunity to work in the holidays due to work experience leaves you with a Huge pile of debt -average is 70K.
didldidi · 18/01/2022 13:22

Also Suffolk, just gone up to £50.

SailorGeri · 18/01/2022 13:35

@Happytodayhappytomorrow I'm in the same area as you. My vet charges that for an initial consultation. We're maybe even with the same vet.
I think their prices are extortionate. Although they have looked after my dog and cats. But if they need treatment it's all the extra costs on top of that.

Lorrymum · 18/01/2022 16:07

Never enough to claim on insurance though!

MrsWinters · 18/01/2022 16:12

Depends what is is, I usually pay £20, but sometimes if I have a quick question I can stop in and they won’t charge.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 18/01/2022 16:15

Ours is £55 per consultation and £40 for a follow up appointment. They also charge an extra £8.50 for PPE.

Twinstudy · 18/01/2022 16:19

£12!!! Where's that??

Ah but remember 5 years at vet school with no opportunity to work in the holidays due to work experience leaves you with a Huge pile of debt -average is 70K.

Also that the average vet salary is about £40k
The work life balance is terrible, and the profession is on its knees with a workforce shortage of about 15%
It's the non-vet shareholders getting the money (probably all those finance graduates!), not the vets or vet nurses doing the work.

I guess that's what happens when you take the business operations away from professionals in the interests of allowing free market competition.

Surely you're aware that the vets just work in the practice? They don't profit from it. So that wouldn't be great advice.

Out practice is £36 for first consult, £24 for follow ups. Post op checks are free. Major city

tootyfruitypickle · 18/01/2022 18:50

This has prompted me to change vets as I dislike mine. Going to one that is £45 instead of £58 consultation but that's completed negated by the fact their pet health care plan is £23 rather than £16!! Does a health care plan really save money?

MyGirlDaisy · 18/01/2022 23:23

@tootyfruitypickle I guess it depends what the hcp includes. I pay £23 per month which gives unlimited consultations, all flea and worming treatment, vaccinations, free nail clipping, and 10% off neutering. I think it does save money. Previous vet had a cheaper hcp but didn’t include consultations in it.

Flibbertyjibberty · 19/01/2022 06:40

Ours is £55, on the outer edge of London. I feel ripped off every time we go...

VioletCharlotte · 19/01/2022 06:51

Ours is £40. South east.

JaimeLannister · 20/01/2022 20:21

Pre covid it was £36
Now it's £47.

Justalittlebitmore · 20/01/2022 20:50

I work in the veterinary industry. The vets don't make loads like many people believe, their salary certainly isn't based on what the practice may charge.

When you take into account the wages of the vet, receptionist and all other expenses, then factor in non-payers, no-shows and appointments that over run, the break even point is around £49 for 15 mins. Some practices may charge a low consultation but make it up in other costs.

Mollymalone123 · 20/01/2022 20:59

Devon here-£32

Mollymalone123 · 20/01/2022 21:02

I also pay £15 pm for all vaccinations-twice yearly health checks-nail clipping and 10% off dental and flea and worming treatments which are sent to my home

Firesidefox · 22/01/2022 21:42

West London, £60
