Why has my dog started pooing inside again?

Nearly 8 month old puppy and this weekend (after months of no accidents) he's pood 4 times in the house! This morning I took him out and he pood outside then an hour later did another on the carpet.
It's just really strange, he's been a regular two a day for ages.
What can I do? Lots of praise and treats for going outside?

My puppy has started weeing everywhere again at 6 months. So I am following your post but am no help. Sorry.

Are they normal solid poo or runny?

Have you changed your routine at all? Work etc.

cheeseisthebest · 17/01/2022 10:54

Normal poos and no change in routine. He's never been walked at set times, always varies. Only change is he currently refuses to walk down our road!

Has something scared him about walking down the road?

cheeseisthebest · 17/01/2022 12:23

No actually I just took him again and he was fine.

My 6 month old does this now and again, his problem seems to be more weeing. I find if I get him out more he does it less. I try and get him out in yard every hour or so and 2 or short walks a day even if it's just till he's done his business. And I put a puppy pad down so he will normally go to that.

Do you have a garden?

cheeseisthebest · 17/01/2022 14:35

Yes do have a garden.

He's definitely pooing a lot more than he normally does!

I seem to be using the explanation of "adolescence" for everything these days, but could it be that? I remember my last dog had an incident of pooing inside when he was about 8 or 9 months old, after being impeccably housetrained for months. Adolescence is a time for regression in a lot of areas including housetraining.

However, if he's pooing more than usual there could be a physical cause underlying it. May need a trip to the vet?

cheeseisthebest · 17/01/2022 15:11

We've got the vets tomorrow anyway so I will mention it.

Does he have set mealtimes?

cheeseisthebest · 17/01/2022 15:26

Yes he has meals at 8am and 5pm. He does graze though, never eats it all in one go.

Ah. I suspect this is one of your problems. He'll never have predictable bowel movements when he can just pick and eat whenever he wants.

I would be feeding at set times and removing his bowl after 20 minutes. Then he gets nothing until his next meal. Again, remove the bowl after 20 minutes if he doesn't finish. He'll soon learn that he needs to eat when his bowl is put down or he doesn't eat at all.

We had issues with our beagle not finishing meals and needing the toilet in the middle of the night, and this solved it almost instantly.

cheeseisthebest · 17/01/2022 17:16

Ok thank you hadn't thought of that!

Definitely second the idea of picking up uneaten food!
