Collie cross cavalier

Hello,
I have been looking for a dog for a while now and came across this cross, what are peoples thoughts.
Im not sure if the cute puppy pictures are clouding my judgement 😂.
I would say I'm pretty experienced with dogs had staffies, jackrussles and a collie cross previously, all rescued and with issues. But I now have two DD and rescues won't touch us .
I love cavaliers but health issues put me off, (I'm aware a cross won't become suddenly issue free). I also love collies but I don't feel I could devote enough time to a full collie at the moment.
So am I kidding myself that this cross could be a happy medium 😂?. I am home full time and have a huge garden.

What if you end up with the heart and health issues of a cavalier but the energy requirements of a collie?

Awful idea.

certainshepherdpups · 13/01/2022 22:51

It could be a happy medium. Or not. Sorry, I know that isn’t very helpful! But everything depends on the individual dog. There are no guarantees with any dog, purebred or otherwise. I had a rescue border collie cross who was an absolute dream (no cavalier in his background, though).

user313213521 · 13/01/2022 22:52

Just.... why?

I have a cross myself (unfashionable cross, not a cockapoo) so I'm not against them as a concept, but I'd be worried about the awful health issues of a cavalier - chiari malformation and syringomyelia in particular. I remember seeing a video of a cav screaming in pain due to the effects of it, but this is a video that ought to put you off the breed

That combined with the intelligence (read: will run rings around most people) of a collie, and the exercise requirements? Nope, nope, nope.

Being a crossbreed (and a weird one at that) I'll bet you a fiver the parents haven't been properly health tested.

Can you give us a bit more info about your lifestyle and the sort of thing you'd like in a dog? That might allow people to make some useful suggestions.

Lotsofgin · 14/01/2022 09:45

Thank you. I was getting carried away with the idea of a happy medium and the cute puppies.
It's an accidental litter, mum is health tested as they breed cavaliers.
I would normally rescue but as I said with small children I am having no luck at all.

Reg flags all over the place for an 'accidental litter' from someone who breeds cavaliers. Bet you good money that the poor bitch has exceeded the number of litters than can be KC registered and so they are doing a cross. Not to mention that pups with a collie dad could be way to big for that poor girl

Yep this all over. “Accidental litters” seem to have sky rocketed with the price of puppies increasing so I am very sceptical.

And agree with the other comment - health issues of a cav with the brain of a collie would be a disaster.

Lotsofgin · 14/01/2022 10:15

Yeah I did cross my mind when I saw accidental litter, I just miss having a dog can't get a rescue.
I am not fussed on breed really any old mut would do so am not keen on paying the silly prices at the moment for a pedigree.
Maybe I'll just have to wait until the kids are old enough for a rescue

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 14/01/2022 10:29

How old are your children?

Lotsofgin · 14/01/2022 10:41

5 and 2. But until recently brought up with a collie cross and are dog savvy, also I am not someone who lets children treat a dog as a toy. I have the time and space but the age seems to be a blanket no.

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 14/01/2022 10:52

If you aren't set on a small dog, keep an eye on EGLRs FB as they don't have any blanket rules they match the dogs needs and the family. Typically this is a quieter time of year for young dogs/puppies suitable for small children families as the main puppy birth points are later, but I have had fosters that have gone to people with your age children

Lotsofgin · 14/01/2022 11:03

Thank you I'll have a look.

A cavalier breeder doesn't have an accidental litter, that's complete bullshit.

Gingerninja4 · 15/01/2022 11:39

Accident litter if he git to her in season then should got her to vet for miss mate injection

Suspect no Accident

Ylvamoon · 15/01/2022 12:47

I have a fashionable mini Poodle cross - mine definitely has a split personality!
And while I can cope with both, I really don’t like this little "quirk". Just think from cuddly softy to crazy madness in the space of 30 seconds ... give me a clear cut pure breed with a steady temperament anytime!

Rosekg · 05/02/2024 07:16

I know I'm two years too late but I have a cav x collie and so does my friend. They're now nearly 4 and they are the best dogs! So so so so loving.
Neither have had any health problems, they have the lapdog mentality of a cav but love a ball like a collie!!
They look like puppies collies and are often referred to as "forever pups"

Mostly posting for other people who find this thread not to be put off by the previous comments saying it's an awful idea because they are simply the best.

People stop and ask us to let them know if we breed her (she's spade so no chance of it) but that's how lovely temperament they are. I have 2 year old and she is the biggest protector of her.

The fact that a lot of people will luck out and get a great dog doesn’t make it ethical though.

Crossing such different breeds is a bit like playing roulette with traits - which means you have much less idea how a puppy is going to turn out, could be what you want, could be something else entirely. Could have a load of health issue, could have some, could have none. It’s all a gamble.

And when the bitch is so much smaller like the litter the op was looking at, there’s a much bigger risk of birth complications and death during birth.

jacksonmontgomeryalabama · 15/03/2024 04:46

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Mix with Border Collie is a great dog. Ours never had health issues. Super Smart but was for sure a "velcro dog" from the Cav. Great dog. I came upon this post because I am looking for another. I realized the original poster has her answer but thought I'd share in case someone else sees this thread. They are great dogs. The one in the picture is roughly 27 lbs. The posts that say mixing breeds is a bad idea because it is taking a risk. Mix dogs are actually better because the strong genes survive.

That is not true at all and you can't just state that as fact. It's a genetic lottery and nobody knows what the outcome will be

Science is not your forte

Strong genes for the Cavalier in crosses often lead to premature deaths from heart disease, I would never recommend a Cavalier or a Cavalier cross because of the high rate of hereditary MVD

Did you get this dog? I have one and he’s the best dog I have ever had. I really want him to be a daddy and wondered if you fancied puppies?! They’re almost impossible to find!

Incredible.

‘you want him to be a dad’ 😂

rightsforunderfives · 31/03/2025 13:39

I do! Because I want another one and they're so hard to find! Seriously the best dog I've ever had.

I suggest you do some research around breeding and what you end up with when you cross an F1 with an F1.

Cornishbredswedishwed · 11/10/2025 23:02

Have you had puppies or still considering it? I’d be really interested in a puppy I’ve had collie cross springer and I’ve had cavaliers in the past. I love the idea of this mix
