My lovely staffie is 12 years old , the last few weeks he's been squeaky/ barky and won't stop having accidents around our home. Got a bit emotional on the phones to the vet this morning and lm bringing him in for a check up and discussion with what we can do next.

I have two children under 3 so the accidents around the house is concerning me. Can anyone advise me ?

Peeing or pooing? Could simply be a uti? Upset tummy? 12 isn't old in staffie terms.

Not sure how having children makes your dogs ill health more concerning. If it is age related incontinence, then surely you knew this is part and parcel of having an old dog and you manage it.

Your OP sounds like you've jumped to worst case scenario - just wait and see what the vet says.

UTI is the most likely cause, common in older dogs, alternatively could be dementia. Dp's old basset started being more incontinent as that progressed the can also lost muscle tone. Many possible reasons really but definitely something you need to be prepared for with an older dog. Your dc will be fine as long as they aren't playing in it

In any case you can get various types of dog nappy - we have an absorbent belly band for our dog which catches wee. A useful thing to know (that these exist).

The most likely cause for (urinary) accidents is a UTI - they become increasingly more likely as dogs age, unfortunately.

I suppose you are worried, the vet will give you bad news.A vet will always just give you a diagnosis,it is you that has to make decisions. You probably start to prepare yourself mentally for when it is time.A dog having regular accidents in the house and it is an elderly dog,is not good news.I am not a vet,but I have had many dogs over the last 38 years.UT infection is quite likely, but it is the reason why he has the infection, that is more telling.I wish you and your 4legged best mate all the very best.
