Hi , looking for some advice. A friend told me yesterday she has re homed a dog , not sure if any money involved. She then says the people she had it off had only had the dog 3 weeks but it wasn’t working out . Dog is 16 months old ish .The dogs chip is still registered to its first owners. Alarm bells are ringing in my head I’ve told her to get the dog scanned to trace the owner. If it does turn out the dog is not stolen how does she register the chip in her name ?

Well what did the first owners say when she contacted them?

glassofbubbles25 · 12/01/2022 08:28

I’m surprised whoever scanned the dog didn’t contact the first owner too tbh.

She hasn’t established who the first owner is , that’s why I’ve told her to get the dog scanned to see who it’s registered to .

To clarify the chip was registered to the person she had the dog off

So chip is registered to the people she got the dog from? They should be able to update on the chip companies website and change to your friends detaisl. Sometimes there is a charge depending on the company.

I think I’ve left my brain in bed .
The dog was never registered to the person she had it off . I’ve told her she must get it scanned as it could be stolen. The question is if it’s a genuine case of it being re homed how does she change the chip registration

Oh sorry I see.
So she takes dog to vets they will scan. They will then contact the person the dog is registered too. Now depending on the vets they might not release the dog, but I doubt they would hold. Then your friend will need to contact the chip company to explain

But to be honest this has dodgey written all over it, original owners should have updated the details when they initially rehomed the dog

glassofbubbles25 · 12/01/2022 08:39

Should say might not release the dog back without speaking to the registered keeper*

Thanks the alarm bells are ringing in my head too. I do hope it’s genuine but I’ve told her she has to get it scanned.

I think most vets scan before doing any treatment, I’d be taking it along to the vets anyway for a general health check straight away anyway.

Qwertykeys · 12/01/2022 15:44

She has an appointment with the vet next week. I’m hoping it is a genuine re home case

She would need to get the chip number a which database it is registered to.
They will then have an online form to fill in to change the details.

If you don’t have the person on the chip’s permission then they will write to them notifying them of the intent to change the details and giving them 30days to challenge it.

Well it all ended well , she took the dog to the vet and apparently they changed the chip registration over to her . This sounds rather odd to me I do hope a random person can't change my dogs chip registration without contacting me .
