Healthy snacks for my Lab

Our chocolate Lab is 6 months old and enjoys carrots, peanut butter or cheese spread on his (now destroyed) lucky mat.

What other snack alternatives are there?

Both of ours love sweet potato, either in small boiled bits of mashed into the lickimat.

Are you just looking for things that will go on lickimats? Sweet potato is popular here, as is banana. I also blend kibble with sardines to get something spreadable.

Also various berries depending on time of year - strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, on their own or mixed with a bit of yoghurt.

Thanks.
I've just bought a better sized kong and will give your ideas a go!

My boy will do anything for a bit of apple or banana. Dh has an apple, rice cake and peanut butter snack every afternoon and the dog tells him when it’s time, then sits by his bowl to wait for his share! Grin We now give him his pills hidden in slices of banana and they don’t touch the sides.

He also has a bit of a thing for asparagus when it’s in season and loves raw broccoli and cauliflower, sugar snaps and mangetout.

Like a pp, he loves natural yoghurt with berries on his lickimat. Alternatively, raw egg, cottage cheese, sardines, a bit of arden grange liver paste. Kibble soaked in bone broth is popular and really good for them as well.

We are a vegetarian household (although the dogs have meat and fish) and basically, whenever the chopping board comes out he is there in a split second waiting for some of whatever we are chopping. The only things he’s unimpressed with are spinach and cucumber.

My old girl used to love sharing a punnet of strawberries with me and another dog we had used to pick her own strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries and greengage from the garden.

Chilled watermelon has always been popular in the summer with my dogs as well.

Our dhusky loves a cabbage heart... And the stalks off a cauliflower.. Carrots are a given and anything else but banana...

If you’re using a kong, mine used to love a frozen one made from a mix of kibble, sardines and bone broth.

As a veggie myself I used to have filling them, but it was worth it because they really loved them.

Our dog loves watermelon. She chooses it over dog biscuits. Strange beast.

Low-fat natural teats all the way - lamb braids, ostrich chews, buffalo skins, beef skins, rabbit skins - all popular here and all low in fat and great for the teeth too.

Green leafy or watery veggies are great for being low in calories but high in fibre so they're filling, you'll probably find your lab loves them too.
Some ideas; green beans, broccoli, courgette, cucumber, spinach, celery, kale. Depending how they're cooked (or not) they may not work so well with a licky mat but would suit other slow feeders or activity balls.
