Can we talk about poo bags

Does the council care what kind of bags we use, what kind go into the dog muck bins? I don't think they do. Does it make difference to incineration?

I just use other household bags (reuse/reduce), like in pic. Doubled usually.

I walk other people's dogs 3-4 times/week.

2 little dogs (tiny amounts produced) 2 big dog walks (lots of muck)

I notice other people buy & use special poo bags. Decorated with little bones or paws etc. Sometimes I retrieve these types of bags unused from ground/trees, so I am gradually building up a stash of them I may give out to the the town litter pickers. They are thin and sometimes very small. I imagine you can easily carry lots of them all wrapped up when new.

Just wondered what if any other strategy others had in their bags of choice!

I like the beco bags which come on a roll and live in a handy little dispenser on the lead. It means I can't forget to take poo bags out with me!

Wombat43 · 08/01/2022 18:45

Pippa & Max compostable as it bugged me I was adding to plastic waste in landfill.

Large & reassuringly solid.

overthethamesfromyou · 08/01/2022 18:45

I just use nappy bags from the supermarket - cheaper than poo bags.

I'd be worried about air holes in food bags?

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 08/01/2022 18:46

I use extra-strong compostable poo bags with tie handles to trap the smell and to make sure there are no holes or splits.

LoveFall · 08/01/2022 18:47

I use the little rolls. They fir in a dispenser attached to the lead that has a little flashlight for poo locating in the dark. Very handy.

I buy a box of the rolls on Amazon.

I do stash a couple in my pocket in case the roll is empty suddenly.

They are decent bags that don't have any holes. I would be horrified if I used a bread bag or similar that had a hole. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

Anything but bloody Sainsburys!
Black, biodegradable. Two labradors, one bag collects both poos.
I get through three bags per day. I hate Sainsburys bags.... did I say that?

What tf are they light green, see through and with no 'handles'???
These are not poo bags. These are pale green, see through small plastic bags!!! 😡

theNumbersStation · 08/01/2022 18:50

Beco bags.

Strong. Can hold something that would have exited a small cow. Compostable.

Ticks the boxes for me.

lljkk · 08/01/2022 18:50

One of the dogs I walk had a bag dispenser for a while on her collar; I didn't like it, made noises, looked not nice, seemed weird.

Yes need to watch for holes if I use an old food bag. Bread bags are pretty safe to not have holes. I can double up the bags if any doubt when scooping. Sometimes one walk gets thru 6-7 big bags for the big dog, so I'm happiest to not use virgin bags.

Nappy bags- they usually have good handles which makes tying easier and are cheaper than dog poo bags.

If the local dog poo bins go to a local incinerator I’m not sure there’s much point buying compostable bags.

TheBugHouse · 09/01/2022 22:47

B&m thick bags on a roll. Real bags for big dogs 😀

Internetio · 09/01/2022 22:51

Nappy sacks here. Probably not the best environmentally but at 6am with the prospect of getting small people fought into uniforms and off to school they clear up the cr*p that would if left to the environmentally friendly teenagers be left in a pile on the lawn 🙄

shinynewapple21 · 09/01/2022 22:52

I think poo bags need to be biodegradable - that is if you are disposing of them in the dog poo bins . Bread bags etc wouldn't be biodegradable .

AdamRyan · 09/01/2022 22:53

I use cornstarch blend bags as I worry about plastic. Only if I have to; if possible I bury the poo or move it into bushes as biodegradation is the most environmentally friendly option

Glenthebattleostrich · 09/01/2022 22:58

Another vote for beco bags. Sturdy enough for my friends sprocker and contain the stink! Which considering I have a cockapoo who sometimes identifies as a Labrador/beagle cross is essential!!!

Glenthebattleostrich · 09/01/2022 22:59

Sorry to answer your question, no. As long as the poo is picked they dont care. Ive lost my handy dispenser and had to use a nappy (yes an actual pampers nappy from a minded child, not that they were wearing it at the time) to scrape up poo. I dont recommend that.

FryingpanintoFire · 10/01/2022 10:50

The council doesn't specify.

I use Ancol. They're the right size and biodegradable. Strong but easy to use.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 10/01/2022 10:54

Interesting as we use poo bags instead of nappy bags for the same reason. Bulk bought a load of biodegradable poo bags from Amazon so much cheaper than any nappy sacks I could find.

lljkk · 10/01/2022 12:05

I think the poo bin contents are always incinerated, too.
The special doggy waste bags... they seem so thin! If I have to lug the waste to a dog bin 300+ m away, I like to double bag to guarantee thicker layers, at very least to reduce smell and risk of accidental puncture.

Must admit I resort to sniffing my hand if any doubt about accidental contamination & then whipping out the hand sanitiser. One of the dogs I walk seeks tall dense bushes to leave her deposit on, sigh.
